When exactly people started calling "edgy" every single genuinely dark or serious anime, while praising truly edgy mainstream shit like Tokyo Ghoul or Elfen Lied?

never seen this, seinen? Also Elfen lied was edgy in that they werent afraid to murder children gruesomely. I still remember the train scene where that little girl is evicerated in half. Blew my mind when i was 15 or whatever in 2005 when I saw it

I feel like it didn't have any exaggerated things besides typical tokusatsu aesthetic.
Any heavy scene was written in a mostly realistic and sensitive way (like that one episode with Johann...)

yea MC was the annoying simp kind. I'll give them this that if the characters acted more human and didnt overlook some of the stuff there wouldnt be a story. Sometimes I wonder about nips and their writing though. They have such a calcified entrenched self imposed restriction on their emotions and what is acceptable. I think it bleeds into their writing a lot and the characters just seem indifferent to the fucked up shit around them because that's how nips are expected to act IRL.
