A study commissioned by anime streaming giant Crunchyroll and conducted by National Research Group (NRG) reported that 44% of anime fans want to see more strong female leads in their content.

The research was conducted across seven key markets, including the U.S., U.K., India, Germany, France, Brazil, and Mexico, in March 2025.

The study surveyed 29,000 general entertainment consumers between the ages of 13 and 54, a group that included 3,500 anime fans who watch content at least once per month. (What a fucking pathetic non core casuals study made out of nobodies and a tiny sample size)

I can speak for Brazil, it's a combination of what the general populace has decided to grasp as the "mainstream entertainment", and general living conditions of the middle class. We had a pretty good artistic development in the last century around music, soap opera, some literature and painting on the first half, and even comics. Later on we started to see movies as well. However we have been going downhill in the last 30 years or so precisely due to the second factor I mentioned previously, living conditions of the middle class has getting worse and worse to the point that there is little to no time and incentive to spend their little free time on artistic endeavors.
I don't know about the first world countries though.
