Life-changing anime?
Why are there so few anime with life-changing philosophy or profound insight? I would only put Evangelion, Monogatari, and one HxH arc in this category, and that list becomes just Evangelion if you ignore book/manga adaptations.

Because anime is for children, how can you find some deeper insight if everything is being spoonfed to you

as soon as you watch evangelion you instantly get drafted into a 3 decade long waifu war that didn't end even when the creator tried to force the blandest genki girl in existence as the winner

Anime is lackluster in this regard. Maybe try some of the following big brane/deep anime.

monster

You can stream it on Hidive I think. They did their own sub for it too. If you don't wanna pay for that just use nyaa, the old yellow text fansub is pretty good if not better than theirs

Berserk is only life changing if you read it while you're young and not jaded enough to actually feel upset when the eclipse happens, otherwise you turn into a "Griffith did nothing wrong" memer

I don’t watch a lot of anime, but I would say Azumanga Daioh was far more “life changing” and “profound” than Evangelion— but then again I have autism so

I think the idea that media has to have “life changing philosophy” or “insight” is something of a meme that people repeat without thinking about what it actually means. What does that even mean to have insight or for a work to be deep or profound? I think the idea is that it’s supposed to be like reading, idk, Tolstoy or where it shows something important about human interactions and life in general. But if that’s the case, then something like Azumanga that depicts genuine friendship between realistic if one dimensional characters is more “profound” and “insightful” than obliquely referencing Schopenhauer and Freud

>Monogatari
Kind of sticks out there. I've casually watched it a couple of times with people when they marathon it(so I have a lot of gaps from missing a few episodes since I could never pause).
Not saying you're wrong, just curious if you or someone else wants to elaborate on why.
I like it, but I didn't get that sort of impression from it. But like I said, I haven't given it the attention it deserves. So I'm curious what I'm missing.

I can’t imagine Monogatari being life changing philosophy wise unless you’re a teenager. And it’s one of my favorite series

There are quite a few anime that I watch now, and while I enjoy them, I can't help but think that teenage me would have enjoyed them a lot more.
Otoh, there's a lot of more chill stuff that I really enjoy now that I probably would have instantly dropped back then. So it balances out a bit.

Same. Honestly my biggest taste change was not even in manga, but books. I rarely ever pick up YA books or novels these days, it really has to be the best of the best; which is funny, because I still enjoy all my shonen (although I’m way less likely to join in on battle board/shonen tard arguments, though that sadly makes up the majority of many action shonen threads).

"life-changing" is hyperbolic language. I would say, depending on your life circumstances you relate on a subjective level to an art piece.
For me, I related deeply with Eva, and its themes resonated with a 16 year old me substantially, so much so I revisit it every few years. Most anime are no where near as resonant though. Its a shallow medium, especially in the past 30 years since Eva concluded its original run. Its more about perpetuating tropes/archetypes and bringing in merchandise/pachinko money than being an art...and desu the Japanese as a whole kinda have shit taste. They LOVE the rebuild films, for instance.

Fiction can ""change"" your life only when you're under the age of like 13. It exists to entertain.

The Web Novel of Mushoku Tensei was the turning point for me.
I was unironically living the NEET life. After losing all my friends, I was too afraid to leave my home, didn't see a point in obtaining a job, and my family fucking hated me for it.
I got lost in reading WN/LN to ignore the world around me. Binged what was available of MT at the time and cried like a bitch when Roxy got Ruddy out of the house.
I slowly made efforts to help my family, I started leaving the house to run errands for my parents, and eventually landed my first job.

Not him but I feel like Monogatari is a very strong fictional study on empathy and dealing with imperfect relationships between people. I wouldn't describe it as life changing, but there are certainly a few good things you can take out of it.

That being said, Kagenui is the best girl and the rest don't come even close.

Evangelion is life changing in the sense that if you watch it fresh without much else in the way of chronological anime knowledge, it hits hard. Once you learn and recognize how much of it is just Anno projecting his severe depression onto the shows and inspirations he hyper-fixated on, it's still interesting from a different vantage point but the impact is lessened. Mari being a character designed to be an interloper to disrupt the cycle and save Shinji can be seen as lazy, but I find it kind of perfect. All he needed was a qt gf to break the spell and grow up.

That is the best defense of the rebuilds & Mari that can be crafted. My problem is Mari isn't even a character... she is just symbolism for "change" and as Anno said she is their to "disrupt" Eva. She has 2 minutes at most interaction with Shinji throughout the tetralogy, and if we are to believe they end up together, they need to spend more time together for the audience to feasibly root for them. This was a problem with the rebuilds as a whole because Anno introduced more characters than the original NGE/EoE had, with less time to explore them across 4 films than a 26 ep series and final movie.
