What do you think of Urobuchi?
Hack or genius?
What's his best and worst work?

Saya no Uta > Madoka Magica > Fate Zero > Phantom > Psycho Pass > Kikokugai

all are enjoyable though. i wouldn't say he's a genius or a great writer but he's pretty good, and i'd say saya is a great piece of writing in terms of what it captures and how it does it. he's a deeply moralistic writer but he hides it so people miss it.

wouldn't call him a hack per se. just an extremely mediocre writer that happened to participate in ambitious projects.

>saya no uta
carried by ost and art and loli porn
>madoka
carried by shaft
>fate zero
carried by having half of the premise and characters being already written. most likely curated by nasu, too
>psycho pass
garbage all the way through

nothing else is even worth mentioning, especially given how none of the aforementioned works could be considered a higher that 6/10

Fate/Zero outed him as a hack by showing that he is incapable of writing anything outside of his subversive worldview, so much so that he has to change entire characters into strawmen so he can make his shitty fetis- I mean stories work. This genuinely made his other works worse for me too.

maybe not what makes it "good" or whatever, simply not a complete disaster.
>mischaracterizations are Urobuchi's fault
if it's referring to Saber, it may have unironically been Nasu's fault. he has a public record of expressing dissatisfaction with how he has written Saber in fsn.
people tend to say that Kirei and Gilgamesh are mischaracterized, too, but I, presonally, don't have much of an issue with them

I agree, Nasu is a faggot cuck that clearly bends over at any opportunity to let himself and others disparage his original works, and from the interviews it's pretty clear he let Urobuchi do what he wanted. The way he wrote Saber in Zero is very inline with his style too.

If so, then that's great. Gilgamesh is a non-character in the FSN just like any FSN villain Nasu wrote

Kirei got butchered in a way that's more subtle but arguably even more damaging to his character than Saber. It's written in a very Urobuchi way, but if Nasu wanted this over what he wrote himself then yes he should also take the blame. Gilgamesh only became a character at all in Zero so it doesn't matter too much.

For Gilgamesh possibly, but for Kirei, no, since he's far more grounded and introspective in F/SN in a way that goes back all the way to his past. The progression his character undergoes in Zero just doesn't reconcile well with how his character relates to his backstory in F/SN. Butcher just ignored what Kirei's whole dilemma even was to write more of the usual butcherisms. The way he had Gilgamesh play a role in it was also double retarded.

I enjoyed Thunderbolt Fantasy and Kamen Rider Gaim more than any of his anime.
He didn't write it, but the worst thing he's associated with is Chaos Dragon. It's terrible but also kind of hilarious when you realize that Gen's character is constantly trying to derail an RPG campaign with a powergamed chaotic stupid character.

I have come to realize I really don't like Urobuchi. I used to think I might be biased and went into his shows expecting to dislike them but when I found out that he wrote the script for my least favorite episode of a show I loved otherwise (Concrete Revolutio) it clicked for me.
I thought Psycho-Pass was alright, I liked Madoka, although less than most people, I absolutely hated Phantom and I didn't even realize it was by him and he wrote my least favorite ConRevo episode. Apparently he also did the script for Bubble and that movie was not good.

Even with Madoka while it's a work I can appreciate, especially after rewatching it last year, but it simply doesn't connect with me. I appreciate the visuals and soundtrack, I can respect the tight writing and pacing, it's impressive how much it does in 12 episodes but that's where it ends for me "appreciation", it doesn't do anything for me emotionally.

I'm not interested in watching any Fate so I'll skip that but I'll probably watch the puppets eventually. I've got a billion VNs that I've been meaning to read but I really never got into the medium so who knows if I'll ever read Saya no Uta.

Damn I remember being mad at the anime (I've read the LN in the existing TL at the time and even listened to the drama CD) of Fate zero for skipping half of the characterization and the dilemma of Kirei, but I did realize later that even the LN didn't handle his character as well as Nasu did (and making Gilgamesh his mentor is a complete fanfic move). I've moved on from Fate since then, but it's still nice to see that people talk about these issues now.

At this point you might as well blame Nasu for being a cuck. Uro already declined finishing Stay Night for him, so why let him come back and write THE prequel story for it for literally any reason other than publicity's sake?
