Aug 2 2000
It's a bit late, but congratulations on the opening of the homepage.
This is an era where even elementary school students have their own homepages. It's a frightening time.
I'm sorry for suddenly saying negative things, but I think that manga is a paper culture, after all. I might be scolded with "you really are one to say that, using your computer (the illustration above is my computer system) for all your drawings", but really, if you don't try to print your stuff out you can't get a hold of the feeling. I like the book format over anything else, I do...
But anyhow, there is no doubt that both the internet and computers are convenient.
It is best to use things that are convenient.
Let's use them a lot.
Let's be careful to leave them unused, haha.
The reward of convenience is that the small jobs increase.
Like writing for this corner, haha.

It's been a long time.
I'm sorry for not updating for this long. So yeah, an update, was it?
My computer system has changed from a G3 to a G4 (Cube). Time flows by quickly. I'm not planning to produce any laughs here in particular, so on to some recent information.
Recently, I bought a denchari (a bicycle with electric support - an electric bicycle). I think it's the best buy I've made for the last 2-3 years. It would have been better if the battery could keep its charge a little bit longer, because when the battery goes out, it becomes a normal heavy bicycle. It seems that I can go between my home (Nishi-Shinjuku) to about as far as Chuuou-ku and then back on one battery charge.
Speaking of which, the other day I was biking on Yamanote-doori. A Shounen Magazine bus (a city bus all covered in ads) was there too and it had a "Love Hina" picture splashed across the back. There was a strange traffic jam going on, so when I caught up with the bus it went away, when I caught up again, it went away - it really looked like I was chasing Naru-chan.
I fell in love.
By the way, when I did pass the bus, it had "Hajime no Ippo (Fighting Spirit)" on the side.

As expected, it has been more than a year with no updates, and high-ranking Shougakukan people came and were angry with me. I do want to mend my ways. And since nothing comes to mind when I try to write, I have decided to do a statement of regret every week.
Recently, I can't become genuinely touched by things. I think I'm forgetting my original intention. This is a true story... I was aiming to be like Adachi Mitsuru. No, this isn't a dumb joke, it's for real. So when did I become like this, I wonder. Yes, that's right, in the beginning I was thinking that I wanted to create works that could be turned into anime, but it's enough of that now. Won't ever happen. It's impossible. I thought stuff like "I want to live in a luxurious mansion", but no. We should just hand it over to him.
Recently, when I see young people's straight-forward works, I'm sorry, but I want to crumble to nothingness.
Jan 9 2002
Well, I have learnt of the reality. At a friend's wedding, I was introduced like I was something remarkable, "this guy is a mangaka, you know!", and they were all like "eeeeh, oh really??", "please draw Conan for โโ-chan, Conan"... Well, that's what the reality looks like. I'm not known at all. Aah, I drew him, Conan. Without making a face. It was the second time I was made to draw another mangaka's character at a wedding.
Oh well. After eating persimmons that said "fresh from the farm", it hit me. This is what reality is. All in all, cheap things are cheap.
Jan 23 2002
Talking about "getting through the worst" (please note: Sunday no. 8 that goes on sale this week has a story that relates to "getting through the worst"), I used to drive a Hachiroku in the past, but I didn't know it was a car used for street racing. I remember it selling for even more than I bought it for in the used car shop. The car I drove after that was an FD (RX-7). I bought it just because it looked cool. It was hard to drive, so I nearly didn't drive it at all. A car that makes your back hurt from just going to the next prefecture sucks. Nonetheless, I am sorry for riding a street racing car without racing. Recently, I finally placed the FD in the custody of Gulliver for 450 000 yen. I ride the one I have now often. It's a denchari (electric bicycle) though.
Oh, and this has nothing to do with it, but I finished Ico. I've finished it two times. The hand holding system is wonderful. I want these kind of games to sell. It's been a long time since I've been hooked like this.
Jan 30 2002
At the same time as some are in the middle of awards and things and even are becoming anime, I am on the left behind island. The left behind island is also a pretty good place.
Mangaka. Aah, however, I am an unknown mangaka, with no great joys, and no great sorrows either. No matter how great sorrows would come after this, it doesn't matter, and even if I would wish for wild, great joys with all my most impatient, true feelings, my current self's joy is a simple grappling game only.
(Excerpt from "No Longer Mangaka", Minmei Publishing Co.)

For some reason or another~ I'm not going along when I'm invited to have fun, I'm not answering the phone. My mobile phone is a non-mobile phone. Please don't call me. I do want to have fun with all of you. It's just that when this small, weak civilian that is me is together with you radiant people, I become so very miserable. It's definitely, definitely not the case that I am avoiding you.
I am really sorry for letting someone like me give his advice, but Mami in the live action version of Esper Mami has a too "strong" face.
PS
Yanagisawa entered my team in Winning Eleven. He hasn't had a chance to play. There is still that Castro.
Feb 13 2002
I just made a story about this (see Sunday no. 11), but it's best to not confess your sins. Long ago, I was telling my homeroom teacher to not tell anyone, before I confessed my sins... The next day, my parents knew about it. My friends knew about it too. It turned hideous immediately. So I'm not confessing my sins anymore, ever. It doesn't matter to who it is, I'm not confessing. It's best to not believe your homeroom teacher. Because I have a teacher's licence.
The other day I was praising Ico, and it seems that many people bought it - I was thinking that it wouldn't hurt writing about it. But you know, you can buy all volumes of "Kaizou" with the money you're willing to spend on Ico... Mm, recently I'm playing "Fatal Frame (Project Zero)". It's a scary game, but why does it feel like the characters are somehow slipping in their world view?
It doesn't matter either way, but really, who is doing the drawings for the Dragondola anime?
Feb 20 2002
Even if normal people are all dried out at this time of year, when spring comes, they blossom. But I'm a starved tree, and even if I'm given water, no blue flowers will blossom. I can't feel honestly happy about Satoya Tae's bronze medal, I'm more worried that Uemura Aiko is feeling defeated, for showing us that beautiful air all the while but eventually coming to nothing. When I see that Fuji Television are celebrating it, I feel bad, and even the announcer that I liked, Uchida Kyouko, is calling her "Tae", and sure, you might belong to the same company, but please separate public and private! That was what I was thinking with my frayed heart.
That reminds me, I watched "Wasabi". You're still misunderstanding it, Besson. Roughly speaking, the story of the movie is that Jean Reno goes sightseeing in Japan, and then he goes home. That kind of movie.
Feb 27 2002
Nooo, what was it. There was something I was going to say from the beginning. But it's impossible, right, for gags to work all over the world. Even though we're all the same Japanese, the gags that work with elementary school students and middle school students are different. But American gags aren't funny. The gags I saw in Indian movies were fun though. But maybe those weren't gags at all. It's fine. I'm limited to this country. I'm a man on a small scale with a small heart. I've been worrying for a month over whether I should buy a digital BS tuner for 50 000 yen or not. It works in Tokyo. ...and other thoughts like that, but if only I could have been funny on the inside! The last page of this week (number 13) is really funny though!
It doesn't matter either way, but the South Korean speed skaters' uniforms look like detergent packaging. With a feeling like "attack". And the Japanese ones, doesn't it look like they're balding when they put that mesh on? Despite the fact that I'm speaking harshly about it, I am watching it. The Olympics, that is.

The human being that is me, has actually not even once received a yosegaki. I have written on one. To a transfer student. I was forced to by the teacher. But, I wasn't friends with him at all. He transferred schools just after we had started our new class, so this was a person I never even had talked to. But I wrote "even though we are parting ways, don't forget me". I have forgotten what kind of person this was, but I remember that I wrote that. Uhm, I'm sorry for not even remembering your name. I remember one unique characteristic, and that is that you always wore an F15 T-shirt, my...friend. What are you doing now? What I'm doing is secret.
Oh yes, now I remember. (I was forced to do this too though.) I actually wrote "play dull soccer!" on a flag yosegaki that was going to be sent to the Japanese soccer team. It was a bit funny at the time, but right now, it HURTS.

Sorry, I was late this time. The first storm of spring has already blown by. It's often like that, the jokes you do and the actual reality aren't matching. But if it's overlapping too much, it can get dangerous though. Like when there are these big incidents. Fire. Water. The thing that goes BOOM! Well, at times like that, I'll leave what it really was for the imagination.
But, even though there are people that use seasonal greetings like "the first storm of spring has blown by" and stuff, it seems that fishermen and other people like that are dying off.
But, when you are doing this kind of job, you get behind on the changes of the seasons. When I at long last went outside again, I was the only one wearing a scarf.
But, I'm cutting Fuji recently. I'm not doing TV in the middle of the night!
But, it seems that Yoshida Kei has graduated from being a weather girl and is reading the news now, but is that okay? What's the secret behind the glossiness of her lips?
I'm done, there is no joke here but I tried to keep using "but".
But, next week I will do my best.
Mar 27 2002
Since I started writing online, I've been told that I'm dark, negative and ailing; but don't think that just because I'm a gag mangaka I'm a bright, funny guy! Also, don't say stuff like "you are a surprisingly normal person"! People that make good stories have bad personalites.
So anyway, I'm drawing manga, but when I'm asked what job I'm doing I just have to lie. Because you'll just get asked what you are drawing. And you make the mistake of telling them the title, and then, the next time you meet they say "I read it". Isn't this the sort of thing that makes you want to die?
Also, once in a while, the police comes over and asks "what are you doing?" so stop with those anonymous phone calls saying "that place is so suspect, suspicious men come and go in the middle of the night and they buy up huge amounts of food from the convenience store", and stop suspecting that we really are a religious cult. And I can't apologize with "eeehm... yeah, it's a bit... it's like...". They come and ask really persistantly about my job. I threw tankoubon at them, while crying. Those public servants! But really, no matter how I look at it I think it's suspicious too, though.
That's the kind of job I'm doing. Maybe I should wear a suit to work, like Hirokane Kenshi. I don't really know if Hirokane is wearing a suit to work though.
Apr 3 2002
I'm often watching DVD's during work, the dubbed version, hmmmm, but just listening to the sound is impossible. Foreign movies are all huge "anime all stars" gatherings. Oh, yes, it's best to watch the dub of "Monsters Inc." Tanaka is just too good. And I didn't mind Tokoro at all in "Toy Story". Now I'm changing the subject a bit, but Takayama Minami is really doing lots of small jobs. If you put the TV on and let your guard down bit, she'll show up. Doing narration for ten minute TV shows and stuff.
Also, you can't have anime soundtracks playing during serious news. Or maybe, the fact that you even know that they are anime soundtracks is worse... They had Conan as background music during a news report on a murder incident. It was a bit funny. But that murder wasn't solved, so I said "so this was impossible even for Conan~". That statement is shifting between reality and the anime world in a slightly off way, how about it? Now I want to die again.
>>280239328For some reason I wouldn't have expected Kumeta to be fond of Kenshi - maybe he isn't and I'm interpreting that post incorrectly, but my impression makes me think they have very different perspectives on Japanese life and culture. Anyone know?

News from the editorial department. "Sodatte Darling!!", will be come back to life again, in the number that goes on sale on April 10. In response to that...)
I know what you want to say. Don't say anything. I wanted to be liked by normal people back then. Let me say it straight out. I thought it would be nice if Tomosaka Rie could be the main character. But that was a mistake. People have their own shares, and you're not supposed to do things that aren't part of your own category. Oh, there are versatile people in this world. There may be people switching back and forth between being a musician and an author, being a mangaka and a TV personality, but I am not like that. I can't even switch back and forth between different manga genres, I am a human being with both a narrow heart and narrow capacity. So if you want to laugh, then laugh at them, the misfits that are protroding from my own category! If I'm made to draw love and romance, I am a person with no skills, I couldn't draw a sports manga either, and I'm half-baked at sex industry manga, and adventure manga... So, what is my category?
I've made a reason to die again.

Seems like tankoubon with THAT are coming out. You may think that reviving this series is a cunning business scheme in order to be able to sell tankoubon to the readers, but please wait! I don't want them to come out.
There may be people saying "if you don't want them to come out, then you don't have to do it", but I'm not a strong human being who can say that. If I see them at the book store, I'll buy them up as far as my economy allows, so that them catching people's attention might be avoided. And even though I keep saying stuff like that, I'm also adding omake and thinking like "I'll be troubled if they're not selling just a little".
I'm a no-good adult.
I am a money monger.
I am a scrooge, covered in lust for money, with not even one trace of an author's soul.
And even though I keep saying stuff like that, I'm doing Doraemon fund-raising, and I can't devote myself to evil either; a half-baked human being.
I've made yet another reason to die.
THAT = Sodatte Darling!!. Before this, only one volume of the manga had been released, but in 2002 the manga was finally finished and released in two new edition tankoubon. The final chapters have modern Kumeta art (and some of the attitude), providing a huge contrast.

You know, recently, I'm feeling this distance to lots of things in the world~ I feel that things that I might think are funny, aren't funny at all to anyone. But wet dogs are really funny. Normal people don't think it's comical with just wet dogs, maybe. But I think it's funny just to see the Nike logo. It sort of looks like a beansprout. But that's not funny to anyone. But you really just can't help but finding the sounds of the paper being delivered early in the morning funny. It's like gaaaaaa, gi!, dunk, gaaaaaa, gi!, dunk. Gaaaaaa is the sound of the scooter, gi! is the sound of the brakes, dunk is the sound of the papers being thrown inside. Once in a while, the break pads are worn down, and it becomes more like gaaaaaa, kiiii, dunk, and I'm bursting with laughter. Then we have gaaaaaa, gi!, dunk, gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, gi!, dunk, where it feels like they're being forced to drive off to the distance. And then I find it amusing by just thinking that "so that house is getting some other company's paper". ..............Eh, what? Yeah, that's right. This is not funny whatsoever. And that's the kind of feeling of distance we have between us.
But I think that everyone must find this funny: The Shonan Searex mascot. It's incredibly half-baked. Please have a look at it.

Since I'm doing a job that involves lots of sitting down, I get this obsessive idea that I have to exercise, but if I were to exercise it would feel painful, and I get this obsessive idea that maybe my heart will stop... If my heart is going to stop, it will, so I get this obsessive idea that before that happens, I have to get rid of all my embarrassing stuff... But if I would get rid of all my embarassing stuff, I get this obsessive idea that the other people living in my building will see me when I'm throwing it away... And then meeting people would be so incredibly scary.
If I hear the sound of a car's horn, even if it's from far away, I can't help but feel that I'm in the way somehow. So, I don't want to ride cars. As for taxis, well, it's bad to not let them drive far, so I get this obsessive idea that I have to let them drive really far... And if I were to go by taxi, and someone I know would see me, I get this obsessive idea that they would think "he sure seems to be well off, acting like he is someone" so I'm not taking any taxis. And if I'm going by train, I get this obsessive idea that when I'm putting my ticket in the ticket gate, it won't let me pass through, so to be able to show that I'm innocent as quickly as possible at emergencies like that, I'm making sure that I'm using the ticket gate that is closest to the station attendant. If the other passengers get stuck because of me and keep staring coldly at me, cowards like me die. So this is wisdom I need to be able to live. I'm also making sure to not go to stores with systems preventing shoplifting, as much as I can. In the remote case that I go to one, I'm making sure to not bring a bag with me when I'm doing my shopping, so that I can prove my innocence as quickly as possible. In the remote case that the buzzer rings and the other costumers keep staring coldly at me, cowards like me die. So this is wisdom I need to be able to live.
So, this is just what I am like, but I have no obsessive ideas regarding deadlines. I wonder why?

On the big whole, if you go by yourself to a family restaurant, and not with a family, you are out of place, but you can't even begin to explain how out of place you feel when you go to a family restaurant in the night to think up stories, and are surrounded by high school girls. They are talking with these shrill voices, and it troubles me because soon it comes to sound as if they are all making fun of me or something. And the people working at the place are also looking at me like "this is a girls' high school, and we have located a suspicious guy here!" Yeah, that's right, there are few places where I'm not suspicious. And even if I keep saying things like this, I still think "wouldn't it be cool if this family restaurant became like "The Drifting Classroom"?" and stuff. I am a human being that gets all excited by wild delusions, like the one previously stated. I mean it in a bad way. If I'm in an elevator with lots of beautiful women, I'm thinking "couldn't the elevator stop and drift away, just like this?"... If I'm on a train with lots of beautiful office ladies, I'm also thinking stuff like "couldn't this train car break off and drift away, just like this?". On the other hand, I think that it would be pretty disgusting if the mens' room or Comiket would drift away. And if the drifting Comiket would go on to build up a new world, that would probably be a very one-sided one. Like, all events in the year would be Comiket only? And no Christmas or anything. And the custom of playing sports would disappear from the world as well, probably... So the future children in the Comiket world would only know sports from those ancient volumes known as manga, and maybe they would think that drive shoots and so on really existed?
I tried to think up something that would never come to be, so maybe this was just a big waste... But I could make a manga of out this, maybe. "Drifting Big Sight".

You know, I'm a fantasista. I'm playing in ways not even I can predict. When I'm trying to go to Yodobashi Camera, I'm finding myself at Sakuraya... Even though I'm going out to buy a DVD player, I'm coming back home with an air purifier that has absolutely nothing to do with it. That's playing in ways that even I can't predict. Even though I left home by bicycle, I'm coming back home on foot... When I think that I'll go home to my parents, I end up at the Tama River, spacing out... If I go to buy a Siberia Choutokkyuu DVD, I buy a Hara Yuuko CD... When I set my mind on getting employed, I became a mangaka... When I tried to draw a sports manga, it became a dirty jokes manga...
So I guess I am just acting all suspiciously. Maybe I'm an unstable person? Speaking about unstable, that's what the Japanese soccer team's defense line is. But when this text goes up online, maybe they're already doing what they should, right before the World Cup. Maybe we're doing fine with the French guy? Oh yeah, speaking about the French guy, I like Italian cooking better than French cooking. Speaking about Italy... Ferrari sure is strong. Honda has to try a little bit harder. Speaking about Honda, they didn't have ASIMO at the robot exhibition at Takashimaya, and I got so very annoyed. Speaking about getting annoyed, ME! Even though I'm writing like this, you can't really understand what I'm talking about! It doesn't even make sense to myself anymore. I am the Unstable Village Headman of the Unstable Village! If the world consisted of 100 unstable Kumetas, well, then 100 people would be unstable Kumetas. And now it doesn't make sense again. It's not even making sense to the one who's saying it. It figures, I'm unstable.

You know, I might be an esper. I don't think you know this at all, but didn't I draw that person this week? But that was before the 23 people had been decided on. I'm writing this comment on May 22nd, but maybe I should try to make a prediction of Japan's future, of June 4th. Eeehm, Troussier won't be wearing glasses that day. And the interpreter is wearing blue pants as a good luck charm. I'm not sure though. Sogahata, well, he is using himself when he's playing Winning Eleven. And Shun-chan has cut his hair for a change of pace. Nakata has been entertaining himself for breakfast with ham he brought from Parma. Myoujin forgot to write in his diary the night before. Toda is studying arithmetics. Matsuda had a fight with his wife on the phone, and got angry with her for her being angry with him, but he's thinking "it will be sooo scary when I come home" and is shaking a bit. Eh? The result of the game? Giants vs Chunichi, Chunichi wins with 7 to 2. Then, that great actor will die. And then, that person will get arrested. And then, there will be an earthquake. In the north. Then, it's decided that "Kaizou" will become an anime! And after they say that, it will all come to nothing. Even though the tension was so high this week. And yeah, "Kaizou" will end. And then you will all forget about me. And there will only be 16 tankoubon too! But, if there is only one person remembering me, please send me a letter. There has to be someone out there offering me something on my altar, maybe.

You know, recently, no matter what they say to me, I'm not getting angry. Like "filler mangaka". Or "minor mangaka at a major magazine". Or "Sunday's Yasuโ". Even my assistants are saying things like "there is nothing you can learn here"... My parents are saying things like "how would it be if you got employed soon?"... When I go to the convenience store by bicycle at night, I will definitely get stopped two times, and they'll ask me "what are you doing?", and when I answer "nothing special", they'll say stuff like "aah, a freelancer"... Even if it's just like being told by a dog that "your life is really not very great", and normal people would explode a thousand times because of it, I'm not getting mad at all. Yeah, even my drive to become angry is going away. But you know, in the past I would have become furious. Because of Shiraishi Miho working too much, or Murakami Ryu being in very high spirits. Murakami Ryu probably doesn't know about the offside rule. And then, the difficulty of Winning Eleven's Master League, Extreme Mode. That the soba in convenience stores more often is made from wheat than from buckwheat. That the drawing of Nakayama's face didn't look like him. Oh, but I was relieved that it was looking more like him than the one in the Puma commercial. And then, that everyone and his dog likes Hajime Chitose. Shindou, the announcer, shamelessly coming back and talking about soccer. That the Taiwan cup noodles I've been obsessed with recently are selling out. Kotatsu that are still standing around. When I wake up in the morning and dust has collected on my head. That the hairs of some dog I'm not even keeping are sticking to my clothes. That you can always only find one sock of the pair. If this had been ten years ago, it wouldn't have been enough no matter how many sheets of glass I had. Yeah, even I have become more broad-minded. I'm not bothered at all by things like Igawa Haruka's acting skills.

You know, if you write comments like "โโโ is so delicious" or "I want a โโ" in the middle of your manga, or at the end, it seems that it is possible that you will get that stuff, if you are a mangaka at......Juโp. Seems nice. And even though I've been doing all this advertising from my side... Like for the Akihabara Denkimatsuri. Wouldn't it be OK for me to just say one thing? I'm thinking like, wouldn't it be nice if they only increased my points with 20%, and no one else's, at Yodobashi Camera~ Yeah, it must be only me who's having bad luck, the other authors at Sunday are all probably getting lots of stuff. I'm sure that Banjou is getting panties samples from Gunze! I'm sure that Aoyama is getting glasses from Paris Miki! I'm sure that Kawai is getting submersible motors from Mabuchi! I'm sure that Nishimori is getting blessings from the angels! I'm sure that Inokuma is getting a young bride! But yeah, isn't he getting that for real!? And Hashiguchi! Japan! You too!? So mangaka are people getting teenage brides!? Who decided that!? Oh, and then, don't write about it in the comments in the end of Sunday (reference to number 27)! Doesn't it feel like you have to get involved!? Let me say it clearly, that kind of involvement already feels painful. SO, please keep your happiness to yourself. Please!
Aah, to misuse my authority a bit, I want lots of things too! Oh, this has nothing to do with anything, but there's this product in the convenience stores I like recently! "Taiwan noodles" that Interpack(?) are making! Optimal when you eat in the night. And it's low on calories too! It's sooo delicious. And then, plasma TV's are nice. Like Panasonic's "Tau" TH-50PXS10. I don't have one of those yet. And then, it seems like they're building good apartments in Aoyama. That's so nice. And recently, there's this super cool car from Nissan..... Aaaaa, that's enough, now I'm feeling all empty! Speaking of which, I said that I'm not able to get anything, but I have gotten stuff. Like bishoujo game goods, and the Shiren game. Thank you. And also, they're saying I'm getting something from Sega soon. Even though I'm not doing any praising...

The more I think about it, I feel that freedom isn't necessary to me. There is not even one atom of me thinking "I want to be free". Aah, I'm a small bird in a cage, I don't need the sky. If there is just some water and feed in various colors, that's enough. I'm not wishing for anything else. It's better to not wish if the wish won't come true. But what can I have wished for until now? No, not even my own existance was wished for. "You know, you just came to be by accident!" - a child born not wished for... "What, is Kumeta here?" - showing up at a class reunion, not wished for... "Are you still doing THIS?" - drawing a manga not wished for... Yes, I am a garbage bug, alive, but not wished to be alive by anyone. What becomes of a garbage bug if it acts like it's free? Maybe the garbage bug is free, maybe the garbage bug is tied down, but it doesn't matter either way to anyone in the world. Aah, so if I am a garbage bug, neither noticed by anyone, nor having any effect on anything in the world, freedom isn't necessary.
Garbage bug, garbage bug, where are you going?
You have neither any ambition to live,
nor courage to die.
Garbage bug, garbage bug, where are you going?

Sheโs a lot of Anonsโs favorite, I wonder why.
