Kyon has hilariously shit taste. Both Haruhi and Nagato are way better than this weepy little girl. She’s likable mostly as a gag character that plays off Haruhi. Her own arc in the novels that was never adapted, Intrigues (vol. 7), is also the most boring of the major arcs.
Kyon constantly narrating how she’s such a pure, perfect and pristinely beautiful angel is always funny to me when Nagato is literally sitting right over there. I think it’s partly a disconnect in character design vs the way they’re meant to look in-universe. I suppose Nagato is meant to be more plain, but she still has a more attractive design than Asahina.

Yeah with that perspective, it's no surprise kyon chooses mikuru for now.

Asahina is more immediately pleasant and conventionally cute, but the other two are definitely far more interesting. Kyon grows to understand Haruhi and especially Nagato over the course of the story, but his fawning over her is a running gag all the way up to the most recent LNs.
He should realize by now that Nagato is obviously the perfect angel of the trio. Also, Haruhi significantly chills the fuck out as the books go on. She doesn’t change fundamentally, but stuff like blackmailing the computer club and getting Mikuru drunk are long in the past for her. She’s pretty cool, and her exploits are more funny than annoying. Part of her arc was slowly getting rid of her icy, antisocial side.

I wouldn’t say he necessarily has a savior complex. His thing is that he’s very tolerant and understanding despite how much he may complain about his circumstances. The girls all like him because he takes them seriously and puts in effort to understand them. We see this in the very beginning with how he’s the only one who will really interact with Haruhi. This is partly because deep down they share the same desires, but also because he’s not easily pushed away. This side of him is shown pretty strongly with Nagato, who is arguably the most difficult to empathize with and form a relationship. He’s always trying to learn how she operates, and in the books it’s very common for him to worry about how she’s feeling.

>Literal bitch who keep dragging and torturing the others, dosen't get better until LN number 10800.

Ignoring the fact that the story people usually bring up in this regard, Snowy Mountain Syndrome, is literally the first story after Disappearance (technically its the 2nd, but I think having Love at First sight and Snowy Mountain Syndrome switch places is better pacing wise regardless), there is this story called Live Alive that was already adapted in the anime, in which Haruhi goes out of her way to help a couple of students, and is genuinely happy to hear how grateful they were for her help.

>Super boring girl who doesn't do shit and just stares half the time

She is constantly reading sci-fi and mystery novels, she isnt just staring out the window doing nothing all day, she is constantly engaged in her special interests and isnt interested in sharing them with others too much, but if you manage to pique her interest and get her to talk to you she is an extremely interesting person to listen to, and whenever she is interested in an activity outside of her special interest, she becomes highly invested in it and is extremely fun to compete and have fun with. She is not even remotely close to being a boring person, its just that she doesnt engage in small talk or casual socializing.

I wouldnt call Nagato an angel by any means, as she was quite bickerish/cuntish on several occasions in the LNs whenever her private space was invaded.

Snowy Mountain Syndrome

“Yuki, I’ll carry you, so get on my back.”

“I am fine,” said Nagato.

“You’re not,” Haruhi objected. “I don’t really know what happened or why I’m so confused, but I’m not going to let you overexert yourself. You don’t have a fever, but I just have a feeling that you’re unwell. You need rest!”

Haruhi didn’t wait for an answer before hoisting Nagato on her back and running off toward Tsuruya and my sister, who were still waving at us. She was probably going faster than a brand-new snowplow. Haruhi was going so fast that if there were a piggyback 100-meter dash event in the Winter Olympics, she’d be guaranteed gold.

Afterward.

Tsuruya contacted Arakawa, who picked us up in his car.

Nagato, in protest against Haruhi’s treating her like a sick person, attempted to convince us that she was in good health, but the looks I gave her must have had some effect, as she eventually shut up and did as Haruhi said.

There are 2 other excerpts that I will post in the following post as I do not have enough characters to fit all 3 alongside the introductory text.

Editor in Chief

The only one of us making easy progress on his composition was Koizumi; even Nagato only occasionally hit a key. When it had come to a video-game contest, her fingers had flown over the keyboard with unbelievable speed, but evidently she didn’t have the knack for putting the information in her head into words. I was starting to wonder if that was part of why she tended to be so silent, but I couldn’t help but be interested in the “fantasy horror” story she was writing, so I snuck a glance at the display of her laptop.

“…”

Nagato quickly rotated the laptop sideways, hiding the display from me. She looked up at me.

“C’mon,” I said. “Let me have a bit of a look.”

“No,” replied Nagato flatly. No matter how I tried to sneak a look, her timing in moving the display away from me was perfect. I was starting to get more and more interested, and eventually tried sneaking up and looking over her shoulder, but besting Nagato’s reflexes was impossible.

“…”

Finally she repelled me with a sharp sidelong glare. I returned to my own seat to confront the blank white screen of my empty word-processor document.

Surprise part 1

She oversaw the alternate clothes-changing of the boys and girls in the clubroom, and as a matter of course Koizumi, Asahina, and I all withdrew to cool our heels in the hallway. But even when it was the boys’ turn to go and change and Haruhi ordered Nagato matter-of-factly out of the room, Nagato remained nose-in-book, not moving a muscle. And yes, I did think about asking Nagato to give a little consideration to these poor little freshmen who would have to change in front of an older girl, but honestly the three boys didn’t seem too worried about what she might see at this point, plus this might have been part of Haruhi’s exam.

I don’t see her being “bickerish/cuntish” at all in these examples. I think you’re reading into it that way when she’s just trying to slink into the background more in her observer role. She doesn’t want people to be concerned with her, though it’s probably not a stretch to think she still appreciates it.
And in the Editor in Chief example she’s just being playful with Kyon, the person she’s closest to. And doesn’t want him to read her story until it’s done. And in Surprise she’s just being an autist.

Your explanation of the Snowy Mountain Syndrome example is exactly why this is a clear example of her bickering, because she doesnt want others to be concerning themselves with the problems she might be having, and is incessantly trying to push away others trying to help her because she doesnt believe how she needs to receive help. Im very familiar with this type of behavior because Ive done it quite a few times myself, where Im hurt or sick in some way, but will refuse help from others because I believe I dont need it, and dont want others to bother themselves over me, it is absolutely bickerish behavior because Nagato is unable to just accept the gesture from Haruhi, and keeps trying to convince to let her go, until the looks Kyon gave her from being annoyed by her eventually got her to shut up.

It this part that shows her being quite inconsiderate of others, not the initial refusal

>Nagato, in protest against Haruhi’s treating her like a sick person, attempted to convince us that she was in good health, but the looks I gave her must have had some effect, as she eventually shut up and did as Haruhi said.

And as for the Editor in Chief instance, I dont see it as her being playful at all, what I see there is Kyon trying to intrude on what she is doing, her telling him no, and him continuing to bother her until she gave him a sharp glare to tell him to back off and stop doing this, whilst again the underlying reason as to why she was refusing to let him see it was simply down to her not wanting him to see it until she was done, she completely failed to communicate that, and they continued having a squabble until she glared at him to get him to back off, its absolutely another example of bickering, as they were both wasting time and energy unnecessarily disputing over a petty subject.

And you didnt even refute the Surprise part, so that point stands.

Going over this, whilst characterizing her as being cuntish was definitely and overstatement, cont.

cont.

the point I was making was that she is not anywhere near as agreeable as you might think, as she has been shown to be incredibly stubborn and insistent on things going the way she wants them to when she feels like it, and is too dense empathy wise to be take others PoV into consideration when engaged in these things.

Which makes her far from a perfect angel, shes still a good person, with practically 0 ill will towards others, but just like any autist she can be very difficult to live with.

It’s kinda hard to go too into the smaller details with her because she’s so quiet. Part of her character, even later on, is how she’s quite mysterious.
But I guess you could call it bickering there, but I wouldn’t interpret her as being hostile or having any ill intent. The “cuntish” part was my main issue, and I can concede she’s not a doormat. She can be stubborn. Although there is an exception for hostility, and that’s her feelings toward the president in Editor in Chief. But even that was Kyon’s personal interpretation. Tanigawa often half reveals her feelings with Kyon as a proxy, and it’s unclear if he means for this to be the truth, or merely Kyon’s interpretation.

Ive only read the spanish translation of the first 2 chapters from the latest LN, but from reading Intuition, and in particular Tsuruyas challenge, and considering the fact how the first 2 chapters were written 20 years ago, as opposed to the last 2, I have a bad feeling that the long hiatus will be felt in the writing just as clearly as it was when reading Intuition. Because you can tell that whilst he definitely is still fully aware of the direction he wants to take the series and the characters as he did before, he most definitely is quite rusty when it comes to knowing how far along the story and characters are in terms of progression, which caused a lot of the writing and scenes to either not make sense, or feel anachronistic when you consider the points at which everything was in Dissociation and Surprise. For instance all the times when Kyon brought up how strange it is to have Nagato talk/respond to someone outside of the SoS brigade, when she is essentially a full on active member of the Computer Science Club by this point, took the initiative in reciting poetry with Tsuruya, and went out of her way to play with Kyons sister, it just takes me completely out of the story.

I got the same feeling, but Tsuruya’s Challenge was still a decent return after almost ten years. It was a clever way to give importance to Tsuruya, which has been hinted at for a while, and it made for a smooth introduction to the new girl. I have confidence that future volumes will get things back on track. I’ll be checking out Theater when the physical version is released.

Yeah, the reason I went out of my way to make this point was due to her being considered a doormat by many, which is an interpretation of her character that I absolutely despise, which caused me to go a bit overboard in terms of my description of her behavior.

And as for the Student Council president, I think Kyon is right that she is upset about the prospect of losing her books, and is generally unhappy towards the Student Council president, because shes shown being quite upset about the prospect of losing her books in Love at First Sight and Dissociation, however it is also very clear how Kyon is exaggerating her frustration in this scene for the sake of comedic effect, where hes talking about her being so angry that she is going to pull an Asakura on him and make him move to Canada, whereas she is simply somewhat annoyed by his demands.

That actually probably played a factor too, though I was referring to these 2 scenes.

Love at First Sight

The big cleaning day wound up being a normal cleaning day. When I suggested we dispose of the books on the bookshelves, Nagato didn’t give me a straight “yes” or “no,” but just stared at me with a vague sadness that left me unable to say anything more

Dissociation

“I bet Yuki’s got a lot of books. We could open a used book stall at the flea market, easy. The bookshelves here in the clubroom are already packed tight and all. I swear, they’re about to break through the floor.”

“…” Nagato slowly turned her head to regard Haruhi, then the bookshelves, then finally me, before looking back down at her book.

I seriously doubted that Nagato would be willing to part with her personal library, and anyway it wasn’t that Nagato had a lot of books at her place, it was more like she had nothing but a lot of books at her place.

“So when we do this, Kyon, you take a cart to Yuki’s place. And help her pack up books too.”

Nagato again turned her head to look at me, and I was struck by the message in her eyes—a familiar sensation. When had I felt this before? That’s right—the winter break, back when Nakagawa had inflicted that idiotic phone call on me. We were cleaning out the clubroom, and as far as the books overflowing from their shelves went, Nagato had maintained a strict no-comment policy. I very much doubted she would be willing to part with a single book from her home either.

I mean the first time around its implied that she kept staring at him constantly when he asked her whether he can remove the books or not, which eventually he took as her telling him no in her own autistic way.

And the 2nd time around was simply going off of prior experience, which he even references there.
