I didn't hate it, but the nicest thing I can say about it is that it was an excellent showcase for this studio's talent. I understand why people compared it to Yuru Camp, but to me, it never managed to do what that show did so well. In Yuru Camp, the characters grow throughout the episodes. You could see their passion for camping develop, as well as their efforts to get jobs to sustain their hobbies and plan their trips. The show went out of its way to teach you several things about camping, allowing you to learn alongside the characters. It even justified the presence of the adult characters, which Mono never did for Haruno, and used them sparingly so the series could focus on the JKs. Mono did none of this, so in the end, it feels like Yuru Camp's first draft.

I was pretty rough on the show when it first started, and honestly I still am, but now that it's over I'm honestly gonna miss it. I still really like the cast and production values. This studio came off with a banger though it's no surprise with all the talent they had working on the show, and I also really loved Mikawa Haruna as the MC. Shes been working for a few years it seems and I've heard her before, but this season having two leads and doing a fantastic job in both really is nice.

This episode is basically what I wanted out of this series. You just need to replace Haruno with a teacher who serves as the club advisor for the mandatory adult who drives them to locations, and you're golden.

My thoughts on the episode:
The first part was a strange mix of creepy and funny (well, kinda funny). Also cute JKs. The twist was interesting and I expected some parts of it but not Tajima not being her name or her already having graduated from the school.

The reunion with the senpai was the highlight of the finale for sure. I especially loved the scene where Sacchan reminisced her time with her new friends while they looked back at the photos and videos they had taken. There were many types of shots (360 videos, 360 pictures, normal photos, selfies, action shots, etc), newly animated callbacks to scenes from earlier episodes from different perspectives, and even a reference to the cover for volume 1.

I thought the final scene where the three girls were walking home under the evening sun was well made too. They were talking all happily as usual, but with the ED playing, and the end of the show coming closer, I felt that bittersweet melancholy.

Overall, a good finale.

I can only say I liked it enough. But I thought this episode was genuinely a good finale. The show started good, had some lows in the middle, but as they say, "all's well that ends well", so the finale left me with a slightly better impression of the show, so 7/10 for me. A bit better than Zatsu Tabi which started quite strong but ended quite weak.

Of course, it was another one of the really good surprises this season. Fun, feel good characters paired with a spot on voice cast along with impressive and sometimes experimental animation. The excellent ways they squash and stretch the chracters going off model to fit the tone of the scne. The skateboarding, the giant skii ramp, the restaurant stamp rally, the horror spots, the Dam, the Winery, the ninja house. They usually did a lot with time had each episode and also went to huge variety of entertaining and memorable places. This will an easy rewatch in the future.

That was a good last episode, but yeah, the show wasn't something I'd remember for years. And it's one of the rare cases when it's actually mangaka's fault, whereas studio did their best.

If it was something like K-On where the music playing was mostly a set-piece for the CGDCT stuff, it would have been fine since at least it knew what to do. What I wonder is, if this was the direction Afro always wanted to take this series, why bother establishing the whole Cinephoto Club? Just make one of the girls the niece of the manga author, with the others as her friends, and have Haru ask them to be models for her new manga. The story could then focus on them driving to different locations while gathering material for it. It's more about the execution. Hibimeshi works because much of the stuff they did was still in the context of the club, and it had a clear focus. Yes, it did not focus entirely on it, but it had enough that you still know it's the point. It did not have to resort to juggling alternate goals like shilling Yamanashi or having a blatant Afro self-insert. Again, the issue is the fact it tried to juggle all of these aspects together, but they did not gel. Unironically, if the series was just outright a Yamanashi tourism series from the start and stuck to that, it would have turned out better.

I've always done this. Shows that actually focus on the girls doing the niche activity premise like Super Cub and BakuOn are a modern phenomenon mostly since GuP aired. CGDCT with a vague, half-assed premise as an excuse for the girls to be in the same place are more typical, and it's not difficult to figure out which you're watching. I think it was pretty focused at least with respect to being a Yamanashi tourism cgdct. Basically every episode save for a few had the girls specifically trying to shill some local attraction, event, cuisine or curiosity. It never explicitly said this but Yamanashi & its environs in the chubu region are the main character here

Mono was a very good show
The worst part about it was the writing and story structure. It didnt focus in enough on the initial premise and put too much on the manga schtick, leading to the show feeling a bit directionless at times. That being said, everything else about it is stellar. The characters designs and chemisty are all fantastic. The monos work so well together and with Hamusan it's just a joy to watch them interact. The animation is amazing. It's full of creativity and can blend different styles together so seamlessly that there is no gap between them. It knows how to let loose and be silly and wonky and fun, and it also knows when to tone it down and get serious with beautiful vistas and slower, more cinematic animation on our beloved monos. It's extraordinary. Very excited to see more from this new studio and will keep an eye out for anything they do. The music was also very good, but I don't have too much to say about it. It adds to tone and atmosphere perfectly for each scene. For a show that is basically "everything that doesn't fit in Yuru Campu Deltau," it had a solid foundation and can stand on its own quite well. I really hope there is a second season and that it gets better as it grows. More monos, more cine, more photo, more haruchan, more more more!

If nothing else, it had some really good animation and direction moments and used very interesting angles and shots to great effect. Wide angles and fisheyes are usually reserved in anime but they really didn't hold back. Same with some of the action sequences - the downhill action camera segment was impressive, and the ninja house had very playful camera placement. They did good work with light sources at the haunted tunnel here too. Overall the animation stood out for me much more than the writing or characters did, not that I didn't enjoy those.

There was a severe lack of skateboarding, but otherwise it was fine. As for the cast, I can see why people harp on Haruno since she did kind of take most of the spotlight for the show. I liked her, but it's true that the rest of the cast was too passive and unimportant. It could've done things better while keeping the same feeling, but what's done is done. As a secondary with no knowledge of the source material, I'd say this is a 6.5/10. It's not amazing, but it was better than average. It had plenty of flaws, but it also kept my interest the whole way through.

Also, .5 is because of the eyebrows. Those were some fucking glorious eyebrows.
