Unironically? Inferiority complex. And the fact that they are decades away from being culturally competitive. Why do you suppose chink gacha trash disguises itself as jap gacha trash? Because for better and for worse Japan won a huge cultural victory and their media output is easily consumable. Meanwhile, China still has to prove itself culturally in any meaningful way. Even the chink stuff that people pretend is good like Three Body Problem is simply a thinly veiled admission of how them chinks perceive their current geopolitical predicament, it's spiritually bereft schlock in the same way stuff like Game of Thrones is. I'm not even saying that Japanese media is somehow spiritually elevated or whatever the fuck, but Chinese media is just fuelled by butthurt and this weird revival of cultivation bullshit coupled with idealistic revisionism of what their "empire" was.
I'm not even being critical just because I loathe China. Quite frankly, that is the least of my gripes. It's that they are unproven as creators yet they pretend that is not the case. I'm on the side of wanting to have better shows to enjoy, but I've yet to see anything Chinese that is unironically good that isn't Jackie Chan (doesn't count, the guy is from Hong Kong) or wuxia puppets (doesn't count, it's Taiwanese). Lord of Mysteries is just another fake hype show insincerely shilled by guerrilla marketeers or Chinese expats furiously trying to cling to some false victory. It's another situation a la Tower of God was or Solo Levelling where people pretend that these works were ever good and not just disposable trash. The whole situation is frankly embarrassing.
