He isn't my favourite film maker by any means. But I respect him immensely for doing a lot with very, very little. He's also one of the very few modern directors with balls. Even if I'm not particularly appreciative of his style and just see it as some cheap arthouse derivative, I very much respect him as not only a creative but also as a man. My only qualm is that he's artificially boosted in the West for cynical reasons, namely for anti-China propaganda. Which I do not mind, mind you, I too loathe China. Meanwhile Tsui Hark recently talked about navigating censorship in filming in china and then you look at his recent works, and one of them is another freaking Condor Heroes movie, which is as milquetoast as it can get in terms of choices of films to make.
