I re-watch it every year along with Shiki around Halloween. As far as I'm concerned they're both masterpieces of B-Movie horror schlock translated to the medium of anime. Shiki is a bit more polished, but Another is more consistently entertaining

I've watched it before a couple of times. I wouldn't say it's too over the top, but there's not enough genuinely good aspects to it for me to watch it every year.
Something like Corpse Party or Mayoiga has too little substance to be worth watching every year. On the other hand, the original Boogiepop or Cossette no Shouzou has too much properly good substance to watch annually just for fun. Shiki and Another hit that sweet spot, just retarded and shocking enough to be fun, but still thought-out enough to be entertaining between the violent sting scenes. The first season of Higurashi is like that too. Sometimes I'll throw that in the mix

Um. I get emotions out of a story, so if I like a character that way, I like seeing romantic emotions surrounding them. I don't see the MC as some person cucking me because I'm not in the story, and I also don't see myself as a bystander, I simply am not there in the microcosm of the story. At the same time, I don't really see myself as the main character in a literal way. I feel like self inserting would have other implications. If I love a character, I just like seeing them happy and see romantic interactions with them because that's what I'd do if I was there, I guess. But I don't have myself in mind because I really get into the world and characters of that certain bit of fiction.
