Honestly, I'm scared of his level of planning and the kind of risks he was willing to take to achieve his goals.
He was playing 4D chess while everyone else was just playing regular chess.

The author, whose body of work represents a deep fondness for socially awkward characters and an uncanny eye for minute detail, has said she believes Laios is normal. That says something about her and her character, but attention-seeking pseuds latched onto that with TOP TEN REASONS LAIOS IS MY PREFERRED FLAVOR OF NEUROATYPICAL (YOU WON'T BELIEVE NUMBER 4).

Whether the author did so intentionally or not, Laios is basically the best high functioning autistic representation that anyone could hope to write. He's about as far on the spectrum as someone can be before they start becoming too autistic to function as a protagonist.

By the modern Western definition of "autism", anyone slightly socially inept with any level of interest more than the most basic normalfag is autistic. By their definition, any idiot Westerner not partaking in the social customs in Japan is autistic instead of just an idiot who hasn't taken the time to study the language or norms of another country.

Fuck off. I'm, not talking about the "yeah dude I'm autistic about bowling" definition memery. When I say that Laios reads as on the spectrum, I say that in the context of clinical definitions.

Why'd you reply to someone who says "he's not autistic, he and his author are just weird, shut up faggots" and "yeah he's totally autistic because I said so" with the same post?

Everyone is on the spectrum if you take 3 symptoms of autism present in a character and go "haha lol look at how autistic he is" and ignore the other 97 hallmarks of autism that he does not present at all.

No one has all 100 signs of autism, anon. Thats just not a human bean that exists. This is what makes autism diagnosis so tricky even IRL and why its a spectrum rather than a condition, there are commonalities between cases but its not a single definitive set of symptoms every time for every person. A high functioning autistic person will present fewer extreme symptoms from a low functioning austistic person, thats what those categories *mean*. Its why they *exist*.

You can bring up disinegneous internet arguments all you want, because yeah people are dumb and shitty on the internet for attention. What else is new. But that doesn't change the fact that Laios, himself, displays enough symptoms of autistic behavior and thinking that he would likely qualify for a diagnosis.

He really doesn't. He's a socially inept loner and has a fixation on monsters. That's it.
Anonymous No.280108253 [Report]
we have evolved from people with no credentials diagnosing themselves as autistic, to people with no credentials diagnosing others as autistic, now to people with no credentials diagnosing fictional characters as autistic

Diagnosing autism is not so simple that you can look at a weird person doing strange things or being antisocial and go "hmmm, yes, those are symptoms of autism, he's most likely on the spectrum". Weird people without any developmental disorders exist, not to mention there's any number of conditions not named autism that can result in similar symptoms. Unless there's a chapter I missed where Laios goes to a psychologist, answers a series of questions and undergoes a couple tests, it's just silly to call him autistic for being a weirdo obsessed with a topic.
Anonymous No.280108512 [Report] >>280108676
>>280099591
Of the many so-called "autistic" characters, Laios is maybe the only one I think accurately portrays the disorder in a clinical sense. I always assumed moments like his argument with Shuro were meant to explicitly communicate that he was autistic without compromising the setting by officially diagnosing him. But the author straight up said he's normal.
Anonymous No.280108676 [Report]
>>280108512
Yeah, that's where it crossed the line for me too from 'quirky character' to "Oh, he literally doesn't understand nonverbal social cues at all."

The dialog between the two of them almost literally comes down to "You kept not getting the hint that I didn't like you" and "How was I supposed to know when you never told me?" with Laios saying that second part with clear frustration.
I have trouble imagining how they would have more strongly telegraphed him having autsim in a setting where that word presumably does not exist.
Anonymous No.280109228 [Report]
>>280107591
>>280108187
This perpetual argument is dumb because there's a literal diagnostic criteria you can go check. Laios never really shows any major issues with nonverbal expression and aside from the fixation with monsters the rest of the secondary symptoms are debatable at best. He could certainly be considered a borderline case and I understand how a lot of autismos would find him relatable I certainly do, but I just don't think there's enough info to claim he must have autism based on that.
