Two different series. The Z fighters were never really a team like that. It was all voluntary and they never really minded if someone didn't show up, they just made up for it. The Straw Hats are taken much more seriously as a team, to the point people shitpost about who joins next. Retiring a Straw Hat is not going to look good for Oda, it will be like he's throwing in the towel.

Not really. Yamcha, Tien, and Chiaotzu show up in DBZ and job to the saiyans and remain dead through the entirety of the namek arc. They then return in the Cell saga only to job to the androids. I don't recall them doing anything in the Buu sgaa.

It's not that Toriyama made them vanish, it's that he changed their roles to spectators.
