Nyaan/Asa is set up as the secondary MC, and then her entire character goes out the window to revolve around a love triangle with another girl (Machu/Yoru) for a guy she's barely talked to (Shuji/Denji).
The story tries to pretend that Asa/Nyaan has an important relationship with Yoru/Machu, except Asa/Nyaan is entirely defined by Denji/Shuji. Asa/Nyaan had an interesting background which had a ton of potential for great development, but all of that potential was wasted for a shit-tier romance plot because that’s obviously more important than character development

I was thinking once again about the reason why Machu feels so attracted to Shuji to the point that everyone considers it an obsession (maybe it is): he has everything and is everything she wants to be

Initially, this is obvious: the first reason is that Shuji is an attractive boy in her eyes and at first glance

But her being enchanted by his appearance is just the starting point, in my opinion, the main reason is that the boy has everything she almost desperately wants to be: he is free to do whatever he wants, go wherever he wants, he seems to live in danger and is not afraid to face this danger, in addition to not having anyone ordering him around, which indicates that he does not submit to others (forget about the issue of Lalah and him at the end of the anime)
I'll explain better why I think this
1. Machu was conditioned to live a life of studying and walking the walk, within the law and living a calm life so that in the future, who knows, she might have a good job and a comfortable life. It is already known that the girl could not stand this life, and when she meets the boy, it is clear that he is free. In his free time, he simply does whatever he wants, for example: he goes out and graffitis everywhere he gets the chance, without fear of being punished for it, and Machu herself showed herself to be attracted to this (she is immediately attracted to his graffiti, before knowing that it was him who did it, and in the conversation with Nyaah on the bridge, I think in episode 4, she says how cool it would be if he had really stolen the red Gundam when Nyahh suggests that this might have happened)

2. When the chance for Machu to enter the clan battles arises, she accepts, this fulfills something she wanted before and her mother denied that it was a job, this is not a typical job of course, but it makes money like any other job, and the idea of making money this way doesn't seem like a problem to Shuji, especially because he wants to go to Earth, right?

3. Fighting in the clans is a life with a lot of action, which is not a problem for Machu. She is an athletic and energetic girl (we saw her exercising without any problems in the first and sixth episodes, for example), so movement is something that is part of her life, but it is also a highly dangerous life, with risk of death. And then comes the part about Shuji: she invites him, he doesn't refuse and shows himself to be very agile, as well as fearless, even killing his opponents without any problems. That would scare anyone, but what about Machu? "If I want to get closer to Shuji, I'll have to kill him too."

It's a shame that the anime only gives us 4 episodes explaining the relationship between Machu and Shuji and even less screen time than the total duration of the episodes and leaves this question more to the interpretation of the audience itself, so although it seems like it was something very rushed and with little meaning, there is much more than it seems

none of the things you brought up are actually meaningful or deep connector in their relationship. they are all surface level things. they are certainly true things, but none of them are about a deeper connection in their relationship. She sees in Shuji the life of "freedom" she wants. If you squint and read between the lines hard enough you can forcefully pry the take that "their relationship develops off screen" but IMO the literal text of the show doesn't support that. They are never shown to have any developmental conversations etc about anything that one would consider important in a relationship. and Machu and Nyan's surprised or confused reactions whenever shuji talks about anything implies to me that they have not talked much at all off screen.

I would credit the writing team as having the interest she shows in him being deep/meaningful commentary if it acknowledged that Machu's reasons were just an obsession/infatuation, but the show doubles down in the finale. Ironically FLCL actually tackled this exact same topic much better.

It's sort of the point that it's built on nothing though. Asa herself would've thought of Denji as just some scumbag scamming bums and would've never thought anything more of him.
It's Yoru who pushes her to chase after Denji, and Death is also pulling the strings from the shadows, to basically ship them at all costs.
Over time, due to basically being forced to be around him, Asa comes to pity him and understand that there are people who are even worse off than she is, which makes her feel better about herself. And Denji does save her life, although that's arguably less important than the fact that Asa pities him and sees him as a person that she can genuinely help and whom she doesn't need to feel inferior towards.
There's also a good bit of ego involved as she doesn't want to feel indebted.
Another factor is that Asa does have a genuine heroic spirit and she attempted to save the life of even her own bullies, against a friend.

Like I said, I'm not at allconfident on the execution. I do think Fujimoto has good ideas but to portray them properly he needs time, to polish both his writing and art.
I'm just not sure he can do that with the amount of effort he's willing to give right now. P1 it seems like has willing to give it his all because it was a make or break kind of thing, but that's obviously not sustainable for the long-term.
I would almost rather see him take a bit of a longer break every now and then to recharge the batteries and come up with fresh ideas.
Not talking about Togashi or Miura style breaks, just a month off or something before a big moment.

I agree, I'm not saying it is entirely Yukinobu Tatsu leaving (CSM started in Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 3, 2018, Dandadan was in Shonen Jump+ April 2021) as I can't find any real join/quit dates so best guess is 3yrs 4 mos but I think Tatsu worked on Fire Punch? so could be longer). I agree in the sense I don't think a single assistant leaving could have done this. People have pointed out the beginning of CSM Part 2 has decent illustration... but it falls off & becomes very strange, which is unfortunate.

NTA: Besides the illustration in CSM Part 2, the story is really... becoming this silly mess. I still go with the hypothesis that success (which Fujimoto wanted) that was excessive has lead to this. We've seen the same from others like Ryu07 (Higurashi), Akasaka (Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War), Tsugumi Ohba & Takeshi Obata (Death Note), etc... (probably more examples that I can't remember right now).
People enjoy Dandadan because the art is good but the character relationships feel realistic and/or charming + some similar elements that made CSM fun. You don't have this "Ah the War Devil is occupying my body! I have a split personality!" type mess that CSM Part 2 has, nor is there a hedonistic dirtbag protagonist.

This is 100% the biggest thing about the fall off of part 2 for me, not just that the art went downhill, or that the characters fall flat, but the fact that it's the follow up to MOTHER FUCKING CHAINSAW MAN!

a series that had banger panel after banger panel after banger panel, (The first thing i did after finishing part 1 was pick up a pencil and try drawing) and banger character after banger character, even some of the ones that didnt get much screentime or development, (the main problem with part 2s characters) STILL managed to be interesting and fun

Fujimoto said he left things vague on purpose at the end of the P1 because they already had him working on the idea for a P2 by vol 6. That's why so many concepts were introduced at the end of P1 without much elaboration.
I do think P2 will answer atleast the origin of Pochita and some of the mysteries about what makes "eating" such a special thing in the CSM universe, as the major antagonist Death is also prone to eating people (and having them magically disappear despite having no stomach).
