GQuuuuuux has more of the feel of an OVA which are often designed to have a different feel. I think the story was too big for its britches and should have lowered the scope of the universe ending to a more manageable story. You can have a good coming of age story without the universe being threatened. The setting ended up being more interesting than the show.

Didn't she only say she was confused by him as a character? It was the same stuff posted here about how his background and motivations are almost entirely unexplored and we have no idea how he even learned of Lalah, if he ever met her before her coma, etc. Shuuji is almost entirely a matter of looks and then his exposition in Episodes 11 and 12, and the fan poll that put him at #10 or so was taken before Episodes 11 and 12, so we don't know where he'd rank in a poll with the series completed.
