Remember the 2000s? Before anime got big on social media? Before culture warriors found it? The days before anituber grifters. Of whores. Blue check "anime fans" who just want to rage bait? I miss the old days of anime culture. When anime fans were just nerds. Like I was on gamefaq OT in the 2000s. Anime fans were so much different back then.

I always wanted anime to be mainstream
Then it became mainstream and I hate it

I currently still want stoner metal and electroswing to be mainstream but the Bobby Liebling memes was a taste of it and I already saw broccoli hairs being zoomers about it

I dunno bros I think maybe we need to start gatekeeping

When grunge was fading, I desperately wanted industrial metal to blow up. Then it did and the most tryhard mall goths and discovered it and the genre never recovered. Going mainstream might get people to recognize your favorite shiny thing, but that just means it becomes the target and reference point of every hackfraud, activist, troglodyte, and midwit who will either badly mimic a culture they don't understand or will actively demand the culture be destroyed and rebuilt around their fetishes and current fad ideology

Hot take: 2009 is really the first 2010s year in terms of content, much rather so than the last 2000s year:
>K-On
Started the golden age of KyoAni and codified their signature look that would characterize the entire 2010s
>Fairy Tail
2010s series that merely started in '09
>Monogatari
2010s series that merely started in '09
>FMAB
Circa-2010 remake of a 2000s anime

I agree, but I still think the online discussion of anime didn't get truly irredeemable until the end of that decade. There's too much focus on being as reductive as possible, and not in a fun cheeky way. It's no wonder most sane people retreated. Too much anger and too little fun. There's still little pockets of fun here and there, but the signal to noise ratio is pretty fucked.

(You) are a newfag. Anime started pandering to westoids and globalists ever since economic crash. Hence why there were so many nogs in early 2000 anime.

It's all just choose your cope. How new is too new to be a real fan and what is your retarded reason why. No real interrogation of how we got to our present, absolutely no speculation about the future because the people who'd live to see it don't "deserve" it according to (You) and a pathetically reductive understanding of the past. Choose your cope.

I don't care about this [anime], I care about how this [anime] can help me win online arguments.
I don't care about [loli], I care about fightin' under or against the [loli] banner
I don't care about [the industry], I care about how the [industry] state is a bullet against my opponents.

If the only way to escape those people is escapism, I will gladly embrace it. I just want to talk and joke about the things I love, and this is the last place on the internet where I'm allowed to do that.

But anime culture has always been paved by other people. Like, part of the reason manga got as popular as it was initially came from shoujo fans.

Youโ€™re still getting a solid three or four fanservice anime per year. Weโ€™re getting anime of series that were previously outright cancelled. The big issues we should focus on are creators being worked to death with bad scheduling and overproduction, but instead youโ€™re complaining that other people are coming into your secret club?

You must be from some European shithole country, or you were born in the mid 2000s. Anime BECAME mainstream in the 2000s.

The only difference between then and now, is back then you had to keep it under wraps unless you wanted to be bunched in with a bunch of spergs who did the Naruto run in school hallways.

Truth be told, I wanted anime to be mainstream.
I hated lolis and fanservice.
I loved shounen shows and wished there was more.
But then I started to explore more of what anime had to offer, and truly I began loving all of those things and more. But it was the year that not just anime, but Japan in general started internalizing a lot of the bullshit that killed our media over here in the West. I never knew how good we had it until we lost it.
