Watched IBO. People say it’s the edgiesr cause it has child soldiers killing and dying, and everyone dies at the end, but UC is still way more edgy. In UC, children as young as 6 are conscripted and die in war, and nobody reacts to it because child soldiers are so normalized. The original 0079 would have had Amuro killing a bunch of 8 year old artificial newtypes near the end, but this was cut due to time constraints. This would be considered outrageous in IBO. Indeed, more than a few characters react with shock to Tekkadan, who are still older than some UC pilots. UC can’t ever get better, either. IBO has a hopeful ending while with UC, it’s all downhill capped off with thousands of years of darkness and near extinction where things got so bad that cannibalism became commonplace.

Alright I've finished the rewatch.
I think treating GQuuuuuuX as a long movie and binging it in a day was a better experience than watching it week by week.
Don't get me wrong the community aspect was fun and all but it's easier to tell what's core to the story and what's set dressing, or what is more about getting across a general idea rather than being important in itself.
So the story is more coherent when watched all at once when weekly you can get a bit lost in the details.

I don't think it will change anyone's mind if they absolutely hate it but as someone who was on the liking it side I do appreciate it a lot more now.

Marlene was introduced in ZZ Gundam (Haman mention her older sister without naming her directly). And according to the production notes of ZZ, Haman was supposed to be Dozle mistress originally. But that was reworked because the obvious timeline problems.

Naw, that love triangle is pretty weak and mainly propelled to prominence by CCA memery. UC romance in general isn't much to write home about. Haman's infatuation with Char is easily the best mainline UC has to offer.

That said, G-QuX actually did a good job to fill Lalah/Char with a bit of life and employed dramatic irony for that purpose really well too: Rose Lalah creating God knows how many timelines to save her precious husbando from Amuro's wrath, only for the one timeline where she succeeds to spawn a Char who never meets nor falls in love with her and who in fact painstakingly plans to kick her out of "his" dimension to boot - that's pretty great. But then the original love triangle hardly even factors into it, with Amuro playing the part of a boogeyman, a force of nature, not a love rival.

Yes, but also the Four and Kamille romance is a repeat of it too. Puru as well to an extent. Lalah is Amuro's entire motivation for being stagnant in Zeta. Her DNA is all over the timeline. She is such a nothing character, yet she is inescapable to in the franchise.

From their very brief interactions in the show, Lalah shows herself to Amuro to be enlightened in an Eastern sense, compassionate, and a powerful psychic who can communicate her compassion to Amuro.
Amuro is frankly a stand in for a bull-headed American, who charges forward into battle and wins, without really knowing what he's fighting for, and Lalah quickly forces him to confront that
Char is a Nietzschean idealist, and he sees his ideal in Lalah. He is a deep person, or at the very least a complex enough character to start conflicts out of his own sense of compassion, and Lalah both matches the depth of his compassion and exceeds him psychically.
Then she's killed.
It's very similar to the appearance and death of Kaworu in the original Evangelion.

The thing is, the relationship between Lalah and Char is very heady. Why it works for me is philosophical. Char is in many ways a total Nietzschean bastard, and it would take a psychic to see his nobility. They don't have like a sparks flying romance, or even too many scenes together beyond their brief, dry interactions, and then her death scene. Although enough is implied.
But then their relationship is recontextualized both in Zeta, which deepens Char's character, and CCA, which has him (understandably) throwing rocks at planet Earth and committing suicide by cop because Lalah was the only woman who really understood him.
Is it a great romance? I don't think so. But it's a good one. The "correct" one. She is the fulfilment of the philosophy of the show.

Shuuji saying that he outright loved Machu while she's trying to decapitate his mobile suit felt so abrupt that it made me think of Dank Dubs' "Guess Who" video instead. It felt like he was trying to weasel out of the situation rather than actually being genuine. It even fits with Shuuji being a stoner part of the time and Machu being a gremlin.
