I think what creates a bad perception of scanlation is the considerably high amount of drama among scanlators, this creates the idea that the people involved with it are whiny faggots. I am not a scanlator myself and in general I believe scanlators are doing good work, but for instance I've never understood the concept of "sniper someone's manga" and why that creates so much noise. Like, who cares if someone picked up a manga you are already scanlating? Back in the golden age of fansubbing we had multiple groups working on the same anime, naturally the same thing will happen in manga, yet some people treat "sniper" as if it is a sin against scanlation culture.

The biggest issue with sniping is that it's usually done with low quality speed scans, and it dissuades the original scanlator and makes them quit. Why spend a lot of time and effort when most people are going to read the speed scans instead of the one you worked on. Also it's the first one that's scraped by the aggregators, so most people won't even be able to see the ones uploaded afterwards.
And recently most snipers have been coin based paywall groups who have been sniping series to make more money. They have deliberately sniped popular series and forced the original scanlators to quit. They're now more or less banned on mangadex, but they're acting freely on comick it seems.
Then again sniping shitty groups like galaxy degen scans is encouraged. But yeah, it essentially boils down to that in general sniping ruins it for everyone.
