Was Mugi actually way smarter than Mio, but let Mio get to be the "smart one" in the group just to help boost her self-confidence? I mean keyboardists kinda have a reputation of being the really smart nerds of any band. They tend to know the music theory a lot more, and she's been playing since she was 4 years old. She probably comes from excellent breeding, her father is an important business leader and could have found a top quality wife with superior genes. Plus Mugi is an alien who has come to our planet only to observe the creatures here, not interfere in the natural development of our species. I always got the impression she was holding back her talents a bit, downplaying them so that Mio could shine more brightly, and Mugi simply manipulated the band from the shadows to help them achieve their successes without receiving much credit for herself.
No hate towards Mio, who is genuinely really cool and sweet and deserving of her fan club. I love Mio. But Mugi is actually the superior form of life, is she not? And as a superior being, she also has superior empathy and kindness, and knows that what Mio really needs is to feel, in a safe way, that she is deserving of the attention she receives for abilities and traits. If Mugi were to show her true power level, Mio would always feel like second fiddle, and remain in her shell. Mugi is the ultimate support character, doing what Ritsu does for Mio, but in a more subtle way so that Mio never thinks Mugi is patronizing her or pushing her too forcefully. Mugi even sits out of Mio's line of sight so that Mio won't be constantly comparing herself to Mugi, and instead is always looking at the two retards across from her, and their short kouhai.
Truly Mugi is a gentle, warm soul who is only thinking of what is best for others with her superior intellect, helping Mio to grow into a confident young woman, plying Yui with enough sugar so that her one brain cell can work harder, and making Ritsu feel better about being a poor.

and I know this qualifies as that anyway, it I'm thinking of something specific. Was like a Benefit (Warp to World 6-9 guy) thing or something.

I've been thinking alot about Tsumugi. Infact last night I couldn't fall for hours asleep becuase I was mentally constructing this post. All of the K-on! Girls are great. They all have such fun and distinct personalities that make their relationship dynamics with eachother and their band work really well together. But Tsumugi is a little different. Her complexity is boundless and it's difficult to see because of how subtle her character is. At first, my attraction to her was surface level. I particularly like blondes with blue eyes, and am a sucker for girls who play piano. Upon further study, though, I don't think there's a character in the show more intresting and complete than Tsumugi Kotobuki. On the surface we see a happy, laid-back girl who is always there to serve her friends with a smile on her face. But let's dig a little deeper.
The first thing we have to understand is that Mugi is a very passive character; Meaning that the conflict, action, or otherwise, in the show rarely originates from her. She is usually one to simply go along with what the others want. There are few exceptions to this, such as cases where she tiebreaks votes for the band in favor of what she wants, but these are rare moments, especially when put up against the active personalities of Yui and Ritsu, who almost always drive the plot through their actions and decisions. Mio is another usually passive character, but this is mostly due to her shyness, which she has to break through. For Mugichan, it's different. Her passivity seems to stem not from a lack of self assurance, but from a genuine want to put the other members of her band first and a desire to follow and serve. In this way, she is much like Samwise Gamgee, which is the highest praise I can afford. And let me be clear, I am in no way saying Mugichan's passive nature is a negative! On the contrary, it aids the friendships and the band in their growth by offering support to the active characters who push things forward.

We can see this contrast of passive and active most clearly in the late s2 episode where Tsumugi and Ritsu first hang out alone together. The episode begins with Ricchan calling up Mio to do something fun together, which Mio refuses because she has to study for finals. Ricchan also knows that Yui is studying with Nodokachan and is unavailable. She meets Mugi by chance and tells her she was about to ask her next. Mugi's eyes light up and she immediately cancels whatever other plans she had alone in order to spend time with Ritsu, as this is the first time they will be do something together privately. (Now, as a sidebar, we can take a quick glance into why Mugi was only Ritsu's third choice. It makes sense that the two of them are the most distant from eachother emotionally out of the group. Ritsu and Mio were childhood friends and Ritsu shares more in common with Yui, due to their inherently active personalities. And everybody loves Azunyan, obviously.) Now, this episode is very important for them as it brings them closer together, but we can take a closer look and see their opposing personalities complete eachother. Mugichan immediately hands the reigns over to Ricchan and tells her that she wants to do whatever Ricchan decides. We then see Ricchan take the active role and lead her through many experiences She's never had before, from arcades to candy shops, Ritsu teaches Mugi how to enjoy the very simple things. She even wins Mugi a stuffed animal at a crane game! What luck! I digress. As the story comes to a close, we learn of Mugi's desire to be bonked on the head. This is, infact, her trying to break a little bit out of her passive nature. She mentions that she longs to have a more physical connection with the others, who are able to express their affections in such active ways.

Yui has no mental conception of personal boundries when it comes to Azunyan and Ristu and Mio have built up a playfully offensive relationship, with Ricchan baiting Mio's attacks through her active nature. But it's difficult, now, for Mugi to get the proper response, even when trying to be the instigator because she is simply so used to being passive. All of her attempts at being "the funny man" fall flat, and even at the end of this arc, when she steals Mio's strawberry, her mistake was that she went after the other passive character, who was previously only known to strike Ricchan due to their previously established relationship. The simple fact is that even when Mugichan does something to deliberately offend the others, they simply cannot view her in a negative light, which brings me to my next topic of discussion. Mugichan's positivity. In the same way that Mugi and Mio are the generally passive ones of the group, Mugi and Yui are the generally positive ones. (This doesn't mean that the others are negative, simply that Mugi and Yui's unfettered optimism do alot to elevate the band and group). However, their optimism and positivity manifests in different ways. If Yui's positivity is Dionysian in nature, being loud, clanging, and energizing, Mugi is Apollonian by contrast, meaning steady and constant. In a reversal of this analogy, to shift over to the eastern, or somewhat new age school of thought, Yui channels the energies of the sun; Mugi- the moon. Yui, being active, always brings the others up to her level, but Mugi, as the passive, provides stability to them when they are high up. Mugi's talent and skill on the keyboard, as well as her ability to write music and melody, give the band a sturdy backbone. If Yui is the heart, Mugi is the bones. (I would argue further that Mio is the brain, Ritsu is the muscle, and Azunyan is the soul(or the blood if you're a retarded materialist)).

Furthermore, Mugichan doesn't just provide a structure for their band, but also provides a base for their favorite activity, tea time! She is always bringing in tea, cakes, pastries, etc. that her family receive from their many buisness associates. She provides sustenance and literal energy to her friends, always making sure their hearts and bellies are full. (Some of her most active moments, in fact, ironically, are stopping the forward motion of the group by suggesting tea breaks! A wonderful complexity!) And now to speak of another one of her important traits, the one which allowed her to shower her bandmates with sweets and hot leaf juice- her wealth. Tsumugi comes from an exorbitantly wealthy family, however she never uses her wealth in ways that feel prissy or prideful. Her supply of tea to her friends has a wholesome air of, "let us all enjoy these things together", rather than a condescending, "I am allowing you this privilege", feeling to them. In the times she brought them to her summer homes for their "training camps" she was always somewhat embarrassed about all of the extra things her family's servants did for them, being greatly bothered by a yacht showing up and having to call it off. All of that showboating would feel like pride, which is something she desperately wanted to avoid. It is clear to me that Mugichan behaves this way with her wealth for two primary reasons. The first is that she simply does not want to make her friends jealous or envious of the luxuries she has access to. The second aspect is that she is trying to avoid cultivating a relationship where they rely on her for her wealth, in essence using her in an unhealthy and unkind manner. Infact, we never even see Mugi invite the girls to her house, probably because of the two aformentioned reasons, whereas we see them constantly at Yui's place, and occasionally at Mio's and Ritsu's.

Even early on in the show, the one time she got Yui a "special deal" on her guitar purchase, it was never outright charity. She worked alongside Yui and was going to help her buy it through their work together (Yui, of course, refused this, too). But then Mugi managed to "barter" her way down to the amount Yui had. It is played off like this was simply Mugi's ignorance of the concept of bartering working out in her favor, but Mugi is a smart girl and she likely understands that the real reason she was able to get the price so low was because of her status (we, the audience understand this aswell, perhaps the other band members do, too, although maybe Yui really did think Mugichan is just that great at negotiating). Be that as it may, Mugi never once held this above Yui's head. She never once said something to the effect of, "I'm the reason you got your guitar so cheap, so be greatful, Yui." No. Mugi maintains humility throughout the whole show. Another little aspect we can mention is how Mugi does understand and value the idea of hard work (likely instilled in her by her industrious parents). Mugi does not need to work a day in her life, yet we see her maintaining a job even when there isn't a need for one due to club reasons. It's clear that Mugi values experiences above materal wealth, and this brings us to the final topic of conversation. Why Mugichan is like this.
To put it simply, Mugichan understands that wealth does not inherently bring happiness, but that relationships do. We can make an inference that she had something of a lonely childhood. Mio and Ritsu had eachother, Yui had Ui and Nodoka, but we are not shown any glimpses of Mugi's childhood. It's possible that due to her upbringing, she did not have many opportunities for friendships. Perhaps it was the rigorous studies her parents placed her on, or maybe she learned hard lessons about flaunting your wealth for others and ending up as a tool instead of a friend.

Mugi never wants her friends to feel inadequate, poor, or otherwise not measuring up. But you're right, she does need to protect herself from those who would take advantage. She only helps Yui get her guitar after Yui has not only shown a willingness to work hard and/or buy a cheaper one, but Yui was also the one who asked if it was okay that Mugi was always bringing them sweets to begin with. Yui doesn't want to take advantage, so Mugi is willing to be generous. It's a real friendship, not based on a desire for perks.

One thing that doesn't get talked about enough is just how pretty the lighting is in K-On. Everyone talks about Yamada's obsession with legs, or the interesting angles and perspective shots to create unique visual interest, or the expressive character faces, but dangit the backgrounds and the lighting are usually better than 99.9% of all the other shows out there.
It's important that the Hokago Tea Time was happening in the afternoon, after school, providing endless opportunities for golden hour sunlight. It places the whole series into that golden hour, even when it's not technically, and then thematically it stays there. This is the golden hour of these girls lives. They are coming up on the end of their time as children in school, moving on to the dusk and night of adulthood, filled with artificial light and oppressive Japanese work culture. Now, in these three years of high school they are able to bask in the warm glow and soft, nostalgic light as the sun dips towards the horizon and spreads it gentle golden hues across their youthful, happy faces.
Mio, the photographer, always snapping her photos to end up in an album someday, would understand this magical lighting of their lives better than anyone. It's probably no accident that photography became such a key feature of the show, even if it was mostly in the background or used for gags a lot of the time. A slice of life show can be just capturing a series of moments, like photographs do, but when the lighting is this good you just can't help but be inspired to save those moments forever.
