Nyaan experiences the opposite, Kycillia makes her even more dependent, violent and makes her retreat into herself. She gets more obsessed.
The Machu-Nyaan battle will have to be Machu breaking Nyaan out of her vicious cycle, while also getting a reality check on her lucky situation.
They can then both face Shuuji. It turns out that Shuuji suffers from the same obsession as they do, being unable to be independent because he is obsessed with saving Lalah.
We get a clean wrap up with Machu having her line of "You taught there's a wide world out there, so I will teach you the same". Nyaan will serve as underlining to that theme so she can actually have an involvement. Then you can still have the romance at the end with Shuuji and Machu, without breaking the previous themes of the show.

I've noticed some inconsistencies upon rewatch that I think indicate cut content.
Nyaan steals a beam saber off the Red Gundam and it's missing from its backpack ever subsequent episode, which means the Qux still has it.
When Machu is going rage mode, the MP Zakus are still chasing and shooting her, then she gets sniped by Challia and caught by the Kikeroga and the Zaku mysteriously disappear.

I think the original sequence would have been Machu fighting the MP off in her rage and Challia stopping her from executing them with the beam saber. In that case we would have seen the purple diablo eyes in action from her at least once. It'd also explain why they were going after her on terrorism charges because she hasn't really done anything wrong in the current iteration of the show.

Nyaan's most interesting parallel to Machu is actually her relationship to Shuuji: Nyaan is alone and afraid, and her feelings for Shuuji seem kind of self-serving. She wants him to protect her, she wants to run off with him when things get tough and go somewhere better, without ever really understanding what Shuuji wants or cares about. Nyaan doesn't give a shit about the Rose or Lalah, she's willing to literally kill everyone on planet Earth just to possess him. If Machu's feelings towards Shuuji were more selfish, I think she could have ended up like Nyaan: unable to connect with him when it counts.

There are a lot of unique complexities to Deux's situation, but I think it's at least a little deeper than that. Machu is also someone at that point who was used by the people around her for a material benefit (earning money vs. assassinating a Zabi), and who had found some sort of escape from a daily life she found to be oppressive in the kira-kira, which presumably Deux did to a more extreme sense. If Machu had ended up as a tool to someone else again, I could see her further retreating into herself and her obsession.

Nyaan might hate Xavier for being the Zeek who ultimately abducted her. Nyaan might have been making mental excuses for having to work for Kycilia to avoid pissing her off and getting killed, but she may have also sensed that Kycilia didn't want to immediately kill her, and that could be what Nyaan is mainly used to from people. Kycilia might have experience at misleading vulnerable children due to overseeing the Newtype labs. Miguel may have been distrusted because he was basically just Xavier's friend, and thus directly hated by association, but also not even directly answering to Kycilia, and thus not receiving anything that slightly rubbed off from Nyaan's feelings about Kycilia.

I also feel that GQuacks could have done something regarding Nyaan's distrust and thoughts on food by saying or implying that someone once tried to drug or poison her. That could be a real risk vulnerable people like refugees would face, and with Nyaan also having to deal in the criminal underworld to get money to survive, that's a noteworthy threat. If something earlier indicated that Nyaan would refuse food offered to her if it didn't come from a "mainstream" source or otherwise be reluctant, then her reading Miguel like a book would work better. Kycilia eating her own cooking in front of Nyaan could also imply a greater level of trust, and Nyaan would accept a meal from Marco because it was at an ordinary public joint. Still, Nyaan even getting in the same vehicle as him a few days after he tried to pressure her to get more cash seems like a very non-street-smart decision, so she's very fortunate she didn't just fall for Miguel's trap. I wonder if she even solved that herself, or if she had to flag down Xavier's car ASAP and he thought it was suspicious.
