What I love about this manga is how much old memories it unlocks.
When I was about six, I grabbed some paint at my grandpa's garage and painted my pedal car white. There was some amusement there too when I was discovered, but I also managed to get paint all over my clothes, so my mum wasn't happy about that.

do we know if he's renting? I can't remember it ever coming up, Yotsuba wouldn't care I guess.
Koiwai seems more like the type to own if he could, which isn't unreasonable in a lot of areas of japan. We know they don't live in Tokyo and it seems like a quiet suburban kinda place so the house prices are probably pretty affordable. And who could possibly turn him down of a housing loan if he showed up with Yotsuba in tow.

Those cans are impossible to open without a tool. That 5-year old Yotsuba was able to figure one out is exceptional. Under ordinary circumstances she would have had no motivation to do so. It was the perfect storm of coincidences that led her to discovering paint on the day she had been shown how paint works, experienced an aesthetic response on the beauty of paint, and told that she would have been allowed to help use the paint. This is not something any reasonable jury would find to be a failure of Koiwai's parenting skills, and you can hang up the phone to child protective services.

Unironically yes

Of course not, no, but presumably having seen someone open a paint can before (most likely using a screwdriver or a tool specifically designed to open those cans) and realizing that she could use a spoon, a tool that has a completely different purpose, for the same task is indicative of higher-order thinking.

Lying to your children is important for their development.
Telling your kids lies introduces them to the idea that sometimes other people aren't going to tell the truth, and teaching them this with harmless lies in a safe environment is much better than letting them go out into the world and getting lied to by someone with far worse intentions.
Plus, it's really fucking funny.

Yotsuba is a healthy, mentally normal child with multiple adult figures in her life that constantly interact with her and expose her to new things; that automatically pushes her to 90th percentile of learning development for her age bracket. People underestimate just how many parents cannot be bothered dealing with small children on more than a basic level, and how much that can affect them.

The cashier clearly reads out the first two, and in the second page only half of the bubbles have an arrow pointing to Yotsuba, indicating she is only saying those while the cashier says the rest. I interpreted the second page as the cashier reading out the actual prices and Yotsuba just making up numbers because she thinks that's what the cashier was doing and wants to participate.

Many do. Some don't. Futons increase the amount of available living space, because after you wake up you fold it and put it in the closet, unless you're a slob (which is a common character archetype in anime and manga). Thinking about it, most of my friends in Tokyo have beds, but my wife's family in the country all have futons. When we visit for the summer everyone drags futons to the living room and sleeps around the table.

I'm not American but is this the best substance to remove paint? I flunked chemistry but we have some fucking awful shit where I live to remove that sort of paint, like turpentine and some paint thinners with methanol and acetone.
Not only are they usually ineffective, they smell awful and fuck your skin. No way you could use them to remove paint from wooden floors.

I took extra practical chemistry course in our junior high school and one of the classes was making paint thinner. We would first paint a nail our finger, then make the thinner solution and then use it to remove the paint.

In other class for the same course we did something with ammonia and it was first time me smelling it. It felt like physical thing climbing and pressing against my nostrils.

it depends what you're removing and how dried the paint is, different kinds of paint can react very differently
if the paint isn't cured you want something similar to the solvents its made with, so alcohol or even just warm water works fine for latex and similar water based paints, but you want mineral spirits or paint thinner/turpentine for oil paints
after they're fully cured then you probably need a chemical made to attack the solids that are the actual 'paint' part of paint, usually called a paint stripper and those are the more nasty ones, they break the chemical bonds in the paint up so it turns into a gooey mess and you can scrape it off, but they aren't really for simple cleaning like this because they need time to sit on the paint and work
google says the can says Water Based on it so alcohol and a bit of scrubbing probably work fine as long as it hasn't been there more than a couple days

Miura as far as we know is a single child, which might explain the unease in her dealing with smaller children like Yotsuba but confident in interacting with adults.
Ena is the youngest child of a three sister family, she is more acquainted with sibling stuff, and probably she can see Yotsuba as the new younger child so she can take over the role of older sister.

But that's not true as I pointed out. If they had stuck to tradition instead of modernizing faster than any other nation in history and completely upending their entire social structure and society in less than two decades they would have gotten colonized. The idea that adherence to tradition is somehow a quintessential feature of Japanese culture is a post-hoc rationalization for their unresponsive corporate culture. "Our companies and country as a whole aren't poorly led, we are just traditionalist!", that sort of thing.

Japan is literally the most traditional culture in the world short of certain shoeless islamic hellholes. The fact that they "modernized" and built countless skyscrapers in record time did not change the philosophical and psychological makeup of the people and their approach to values and social behavior. The aesthetic principles of this continue to be seen in countless aspects regardless of the steel and glass it intermingles with. On a non-corporate, individual level, there is practically NO modernization. My wife's family's second house is still continually refurbished with the same sap-dripping bare wood as the day it was built. In the center room is the family shrine, and a >150 year old book containing the names of every ancestor, with portraits on the walls stretching back to those early pinhole-camera type portraits. I don't want to get too into private details but the drama in her family involving adoptions and un-adoptions and re-adoptions over the hereditary lineages of the people of her town that carry on the same old hierarchies of boss families and subservient that stretch back centuries are insane.

To say Japan is not "traditional" is an utterly absurd non-starter as far as I'm concerned, and I can't imagine what would possess someone to give voice to a meaningless statement like that.

The fault in your logic lies here:
>The Japanese modernized very quickly, therefore they are not traditional
However, the truth is:
>The Japanese modernized quickly despite being very traditional
If anything, the Meiji restoration was just another episode in a long tradition of struggle between Emperor and Shogun.
Another mistake you're making is assuming that changes in the politics or structure of government have any bearing on the ingrained behaviors of the people themselves. Even if you consider the government non-traditional, it does not necessarily apply to the people.

I will also add that yes, some Japanese may agree with you - see: Mishima fearing the decay of Japanese traditional society with the total redistribution of the Emperor's power after the war - and yes, many Japanese people are not exactly living lifestyles in any way comparable to those common even 50 years ago, but still, there are many traditional/cultural/superstitious elements present in the average person that can only be taken out of them by permanent transplantation to the West in early childhood.

>those panels showing Yotsuba struggling with the basket.

Azuma is unironically so good. This is such a minute detail that gives the manga such an authentic feel. The way he captures children mannerisms and thinking is truly unmatched.

Its sad we all kinda forget what we used to be like as kids. Yotsuba works really well in that regard to remind me how i saw the world when I was little. Children suffer because adults dont remember their own childhoods and they treat them like retarded sub humans.

>there are many traditional/cultural/superstitious elements present in the average person that can only be taken out of them by permanent transplantation to the *other culture* in early childhood.
This applies to pretty much any culture. Obviously there are many traditional aspects of Japanese life and culture, but that applies to any nation or people with a long history. My own country still celebrates pagan holidays despite being Christian for over a thousand years. I just don't buy this idea that Japanese are particularly more traditional than any other group of people. I feel like it's more of a case that Americans are less traditional than most other nations due to their relatively short history and a lack of shared backstory. They then view Japanese as ultra-traditional simply because Japanese are more different from them and this view then bleeds into other non-American countries due to American cultural hegemony.

Japan is an exceptionally traditionalist country. This isn't up for debate. It is ingrained in the fabric of every citizen's being. It is not just a minor collection of holidays or lip service.

I recently saw an ad for "unbreakable helmets" for bikers and cyclists, and people were shitting themselves about those helmets being so cool and so much more safe! They don't realize that the helmet is supposed to break. If the helmet is completely solid the force of the impact is transmitted through it and your skull receives the whole impact but, if the helmet breaks, it absorbs the vast majority of the force. It's just like the front of cars getting destroyed in accidents, they are supposed to do that to absorb the impact.
Just wanted to share it with you all.

In Japan only the Imperial family has any sort of legal status, all other nobility is defunct. Although previously noble families still command large amounts of influence and political power due to their wealth and connections, there is no legal distinction between them and ordinary citizens. Whereas UK still has an entire noble class with privileges, including a non-elected legislative chamber.

It all plays out like this
>Celtic peoples have days in fall that focus on spirits and the deceased.
>Catholic Church co-ops the days through their own commemoration of the deceased, All Saint's on Nov. 1st and All Soul's on Nov. 2nd.
>certain pagan practices and folklore continue and are Christianized.
>Some of these people eventually immigrate to America, bringing the practices with them.
>Practices become Americanized.
If anything, modern Halloween is an American holiday that's about dressing up and focusing on scary things, which include spirits.

tl;dr sort of.
Its not explicitly religious but its origins are, like alot of other Christian holidays, a co-option of pagan festivals into Christian tradition. Its also a holiday with origins in, and these days mostly practiced, by Christians in Christian nations. iirc it is becoming exported more to Asia (Japan and Korea especially. I dunno about China) by the spread of American culture but it's not really a thing there the way it is here.

tl;dr Cool Japan was a campaign by the Japanese government in order to improve the cultural image of Japan abroad and cast the nation as generally being "cool," and emphasizing it as a global cultural powerhouse, as well as promoting the quality and efficacy of Japanese trade goods abroad. It derives the name from the earlier "Cool Brittania" campaign of the United Kingdom which had similar goals.

There's also a pun associated with Cool Japan. Japan used to be quite strict on work appropriate clothing, for example in some places men were not allowed to take off their coats while working in the office. So "Cool Japan" also loosened the restrictions, forbidding employers from forcing a dress code that would overheat their workers, so men can wear just a button-up during summer now and not be forced to wear their coat all day. It also encouraged employers to purchase AC units for their offices
In this case, a Kimono is really hot because it consists of several layers of clothing, whereas a Happi is a lot breezier being just a single layer over your normal clothes, ergo Cool Japan. Although it's October so I don't think it matters a whole lot and Fuuka is just being a fat lazy BITCH

Why isn't Halloween more popular in Japan? It seems right up their alley, given how notoriously safe the country is (generally speaking).
>fun way to interact with your neighborhood, and just interact with people having a fun time with their kids
>TONS of Japanese youkai/folklore to inspire costumes
>you can literally opt-out of the holiday by just leaving your porch light off
Maybe it's too "western", idk.

I think it is catching on pretty quickly, as far as things like that go
I have no numbers to back this up but I'd assume that before the modern era a change like that would take a dozen generations of cultural osmosis before it got any significant foothold but while it obviously isn't widely practiced in japan it is pretty well known and some kids participate and no one thinks it's that crazy, it's on track to become pretty commonplace in like two generations

NtA but imo there's nothing better than forming your own opinions with flawed pre 20th century knowledge of quaint scholars scholars as a starting point.
To quote an example, no matter how flawed, Burton's edition of Arabian Nights is full of soul. There are probably better, more accurate translations by now, but nobody is going to write better nonsense like a British explorer who not only translated but included detailed footnotes of his visits to arab brothels.

Read it then find more creditable sources.
