Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the sixteenth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>280070422

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the one very short story by Rumiko Takahashi that I was previously unable to locate. The scans I have are fan scans. The name of the story is "The Shape of Gluttony".

Left said ใƒœใ‚ฑใ‚ซใ‚น again here. I've heard the sentiment that Japanese is much less concerned about repetition than English is and I can sort of understand why they chose to now write "you idiot" every time. But it is a goofy comedy, so I don't know if that's necessarily correct.

I'm not sure in what way Rokumon's painful tooth situation affected his pronunciation in Japanese, but here's his line here: "ใ‚Œใ‚‚ใŠ้ซ˜ใ„ใ‚“ใ‚Œใ—ใ‚‡ใ~?"

I also think Right's line here is her dialect: "ใ‚ฟใ‚ฐใฉใ™~".

RIN-NE - c150 (v16) - p025 [dig] [The Dream of Sharing an Umbrella] [VIZ Media] [danke-Empire]
Original title is ๅคขใฎ็›ธๅˆใ„ๅ‚˜. This translation is accurate but ็›ธๅˆใ„ๅ‚˜ basically means mutual umbrella. Anyway, I have a note from Furinkan about the topic on a chapter of Ranma 1/2:

"The concept of a couple walking under an umbrella together is seen as particularly romantic in Japan which gave rise to the term "ai ai gasa" (็›ธๅˆๅ‚˜), meaning a "shared umbrella". Because the term also sounds like "love" (ๆ„›/ai) there is a romantic connotation that is produced. Additionally you sometime see a couple write their names beneath a simple sketch of an umbrella for similar reasons."

In Japanese culture, this doodle of an umbrella is often used the same way as a heart with two names. Anyway, they might explain all this in the chapter too.

June 20th, 2012. Author's note:
"Q: If you could change your name, what would you choose?
A: I wouldn't want to change the stroke count."

Whenever asked about wanting to stop, she basically says "manga is fun". In a joint interview in 2021, she suggested that Itagaki (Baki's writer) die at his desk after saying her usual stance. However, she has also said that Mao might be her last manga (or maybe just her last series?). Of course, those two ideas aren't mutually exclusive.

The term translated as "disembodied spirit" is ็”Ÿ้œŠ. It has come up before in the past, but refers to a "living spirit", ie. the separated spirit of someone who hasn't died yet. It can also be a vengeful spirit spawned from one's hate.

Copy and pasted that explanation from before.

Furinkan has a long-winded note about this topic:

""Excuse me, but aren't those legitimate union activities?" - Although labor unions have existed in Japan since the 1890s the government largely kept them in check until the post-war occupation of Japan. In December 1945 the "Labor Union Law" was enacted in Japan that set up the first modern labor unions following World War II. By 1950 there was a split between more centrist and left-leaning labor groups which eventually lead to the creation of the General Council of Trade Unions (Sohyo/็ท่ฉ•) which served as the umbrella organization for nearly half of all labor unions in Japan. Sohyo eventually merged with Rengo (้€ฃๅˆ) in 1987."

I dunno why Furinkan wrote demashigami rather than damashigami. They have an image that shows these vests off, which I guess I'll post after the dump if I remember.

>focusing too much on reading the whole word in education is causing some literacy issues nowadays.
i've heard about that yeah
reminds me of how in math they'd always say you should learn the full method before you start using shortcuts
we can read the whole word quickly like that because of all the familiarity with the alphabet and its sounds
like no i don't remember the technical term/reason for why the vowel changes when you add E at the end
>bit vs bite
>spit vs spite
>cat vs Kate
but i *know* it's a thing, such that i would probably apply that rule to a new word i hadn't seen before
>Surely that also applies to Japanese for native speakers?
i think that would be the case in spoken japanese, children have issues with some sounds as they learn to speak after all
but the kana system doesn't allow that much leeway
switching Rs with Ws like in
>cwying
>pwobably
>weally
creates nonsense words
but there are several japanese words that are literally only one syllable away from being a different word (allegedly they keep kanji to distinguish things)
english has its words that are only one sound off from being a different word
>but -> bat -> pat -> pan -> pants
but notice that short words like this weren't messed with in rokumon's dialogue

I remember finding out that ใ‚† is hiragana and stems from the "yu" sound in ใŠๆนฏ (oyu) or hot water. So, it doesn't really "mean" baths, it just is used to represent them. Bathhouses have it on them to show that they are bathhouses.

Also, untranslated signs. Between the peaches, we have "็‘ฐๆด—ๅ‡€" which seems to mean "cleaning". We have "ใƒ™ใƒƒใƒˆๆตดๅ ด" (betto yokujou) which given the little paw prints probably means "pet bath". "ใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆ2ๅ€" which seems to mean "2x points". ๅคงๆตดๅ ด which just means large bath.

I also have a Furinkan note here:
"Tsubasa says that the bathhouse in the afterlife is like a ใ‚นใƒผใƒ‘ใƒผ้Šญๆนฏ (Suupaa Sento/Super Sento), a "super bathhouse" which is a term for a large, deluxe public bath. Hairdressers and massage chairs may be available at some of these venues. These large scale bathhouses began to appear in Japan around 1985."

Furinkan has two notes here:

"The stamps on the spirits point cards all look like the Wheel of Reincarnation. The wheel itself is an important part of Buddhist iconography. In Sanskrit "wheel" is "chakra" and Shakyamuni (the human name of Buddha) is said to have "turned the wheel of law" for the first time when he gave his sermon in the Deer Park. Consequently the wheel represents Buddha's teachings.
"On an added note, they can currently receive double points because now it's a pre-obon service!" - Obon is a Japanese Buddhist festival that honors the spirits of the departed."

Also, we got an angel working in a legitimate establishment. And no, I have no idea what the points do. I assume you keep the same card through reincarnations... The point sign used English letters in the original manga as well.

Furinkan notes that: "The onomatopoeia that appears around the foreigner that thanks Rinne says "ใƒšใƒฉใƒšใƒฉ" (perapera). This is the "sound" of fluent speaking."

And yes, the foreigners dialogue was written in English in the original manga as well. The font was different, but I guess VIZ thought the rather plain Helvetica looking font didn't suit the comic book style lettering of the rest of the localization and went with a clearly distinct font but one that also looks arguably more fitting.

Makes sense. I know I probably couldn't do an Japanese exam about English. Also, the term localized as "rest-in-peace points" was "ๆˆไปใƒใ‚คใƒณใƒˆ" (joubutsu pointo), ie. Buddhahood points or Attaining Nirvana Points. Which I guess explains what the points are for. Rest-In-Peace is probably an accurate enough translation for ๆˆไป in most of the series, but I feel here, it is pretty clearly just referring to Buddhism like the Wheel of Reincarnation is as well, so they probably should've just kept it.

This is a cool interview and I'll post the crossover illustration after the dump. Here's the link to their translation of it: https://www.furinkan.com/takahashi/takahashi67.html

Would Rinne need more blood since he isn't a pure blooded Shinigami?
Also I've been thinking about it for a while, Rinne is 3/4 shinigami and without the Haori of the Underworld he's basically a normal human, wouldn't Sabato, who's only half shinigami, also need to use it?

More angels. I assume that the angelic and demonic appearances are just fashion trends in shinigami, but we do have actual demons so I can't be sure.

It was labelled with the English word "Gold" in the original manga as well. Furinkan notes that: "In Rokumon's dream he and Rinne go to eat at a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. These are called ๅ›ž่ปขๅฏฟๅธ (kaitenzushi). You pay your bill by showing the number of plates you ate with the color of the plate indicating the price of each item."

We have those in the US now. Also, the untranslated sign in the back says "้ฎช็ฅญ" (Tuna Festival?), "ๅคงใƒˆใƒญ่ตค่บซใ€ใ‚ปใƒƒใƒˆ" (Fatty Tuna Lean Meat Set) and ใคใฟใŸๆฑไป˜ (With soup).

Original title is ใƒฏใƒณใ‚ณใ‚คใƒณ่ชฟๆŸป. ใƒฏใƒณใ‚ณใ‚คใƒณ (wan koin) are loanwords from the English "one coin".

Furinkan notes that: "A double issue means that Shonen Sunday did not run an issue the following week, usually due to a holiday." So, there'll be a gap in the dates here.

Oh good, Furinkan has a note so I don't have to explain this festival game:

"Renge is inviting people to play ้ขจ่ˆน้‡ฃใ‚Š (fusen tsuri/balloon fishing) at her stand. With this game the competitor is given a hook (usually made of a paper clip) and a line (made of paper) that they have to dip and hook a water balloon from a pool. The player has to be careful because if the paper line gets wet the weight of the water balloon will cause it to break easily."

Well, I tried to describe it in the OP, but I guess I left it fairly vague. This is a manga about a poor shinigami (grim reaper type guy) and his jobs getting ghosts to pass on. You know the ghost story chapters in UY or Ranma 1/2? It is a lot like that. There are other cast members, but that is a quick and dirty synopsis. It is not as high energy as UY or Ranma 1/2, but it is similarly wacky. You can basically read any given chapter in this volume and get a relatively good idea of what the series is like. I'd pick the umbrella one >>280190928

I'll be real with you, not as much romance as either UY or Ranma 1/2.

>>280195534
End of chapter, end of volume. It is nice to get all these summer chapters right now.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Saturday to dump Volume 17 of Rin-ne. But right now, I will be dumping the very brief Rumiko Takahashi one-shot "The Shape of Gluttony".

Thanks for the explanation though, and doing good work here

ๆšด้ฃŸใฎใƒ•ใ‚ฉใƒซใƒ  (Boushoku no forumu) or "The Shape of Gluttony" was published on November 1st, 1982 in Boys and Girls Complete Competitive Collection of SF Manga (ๅฐ‘ๅนดๅฐ‘ๅฅณSFใƒžใƒณใ‚ฌ็ซถไฝœๅคงๅ…จ้›†) Part 8. Furinkan notes that it came out between chapter 56 and chapter 57 of Urusei Yatsura. Which is around Volume 6. I was unable to previously locate this translation of it and did not post it even though I was posting Rumiko Takahashi one-shots alongside UY. So, this was around forty years before the chapters in the Rin-ne volume I posted in this thread.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. This story has six pages of full color. It seems the fanscans found the original printing of the story, which is great.

This fanscan is actually by one of the creators of Furinkan who translates many of these interviews and compiles the site! It is unusual to see this, but they have previously translated similarly obscure Rumiko Takahashi manga before. I honestly wish they'd translate more of the works themselves, but I assume they don't want to get in trouble. No cover really, we start right away!

Much like Yusaku Godai, the protagonist here is a "ronin". Here's Furinkan's note regarding the term:

""Ronin: Someone who didn't get into college straight out of high school and is spending a year (or more) studying privately to retake the entrance exams. This term originally referred to masterless samurai.""

He also basically looks like Godai did when MI was first starting. We can see a KFC box here.

End! Yup. That's it. It is a very brief thing. It is neat to see a full Rumiko Takahashi story in full color though. I omitted the usual note regarding the creatures because they basically spoil the entire joke but here's Furinkan's note regarding them:

"The story revolves around the young man's assumption that the creature is a zashiwarashi (ๅบงๆ•ท็ซฅ). Zashiwarashi are child-like in appearance and are supposed to bring good fortune to a home that they are found in. However, he eventually learns that the woman is another type of supernatural creature- a gaki (้ค“้ฌผ). Gaki, are "hungry ghosts", some of the lowest creatures one can be reborn as if you have particularly bad karma. Being reborn as a gaki is one of the worst fates, not only due to their ravenous appetites (they eat dead skin, fingernails, dust, ear wax) they also do not have an opportunity to accrue good karma, and it is unlikely that they can work towards being reborn as a better creature in their next lives."

Bit nostalgic to read this. I don't really have much more to say about it. As mentioned before, I'll be back next Saturday for Volume 17 of Rin-ne. Thanks again for reading.

Here's that crossover illustration. And here's a chunk from the interview:

"Arakawa: I love drawing a variety of things...I loved drawings of yokai and animals. I also copied Ranma (Ranma Saotome, the main character in Ranma 1/2) a lot. He may be the prototype of the humans characters I draw now actually. Until then, I had drawn only animals. Anyway, I'm just so thrilled to meet you.

Takahashi: Thank you very much. I first encountered Arakawa-san's work through the Fullmetal Alchemist anime. My assistant was a big fan of it. She gave me a lecture about how great it was. And when I read the manga, I thought, "Wow! I don't know what to say." It was very logical. I don't feel like I'm getting drunk on it. I mean, I think there are times when you become so absorbed in a work that you lose sight of the world around you, but that wasn't the case. You don't have that problem.

Arakawa: Hmmm. I wonder.

Takahashi: But, you know, I thought this was really great. The series was always steady and stable, but it was also very passionate, wasn't it? It has been a long time since I have seen such a well-balanced manga. I was a little surprised.

Arakawa: You're too kind.

Takahashi: I said, "This is the real thing, right here!"

Arakawa: I won't be able to sleep tonight! No, but you really don't know what a manga will become until you put it out there.

Takahashi: But to have your first serial publication at that level... it's amazing.
[Interviewer:] Takahashi-sensei, You also had hits from the beginning, didn't you?
Takahashi: No, no, no, that was a different era. Why are you so good at drawing, Arakawa-san?

Arakawa: Eh, no, no. No, Takahashi-sensei is better.

Takahashi: How did you become so good?"

Very humble people. Takahashi acknowledges it was a different era.

shonen jump wasn't even that big of a thing when rumiko started
regardless, that doesn't change the fact that rumiko has consistently put out ~18 page chapters every week for 40+ years
see chart >>280216038
and this chart doesn't cover her other publications in other magazines like with maison ikkoku and one pound gospel (that was before the inuyasha era though, she doesn't juggle series like that anymore)
detective conan is in the same magazine and is constantly taking breaks
i bet rumiko could take more breaks if she wanted to because she is HER but she doesn't

That's the point; she never really went through the real strain making manga does, by magazine or virtue of her own art. Her art being simplistic is not making a toll on anyone, now a month of Hagiwara level art boderline kills any motherfucker. Peak SJ was the best thing around, almost every series was a heavy hitter mag seller

Once again; the time is impressive but not when you took it easy for most of it. Feel free to be overdefensive branding this criticism as "hate"

Rumiko definitely keeps her art simplistic to keep up with doing a weekly manga. She also has a fondness for it, since it is what "manga-like" means to her which makes sense given her inspirations.

And yeah, Shonen Sunday is only the fourth most popular manga magazine. But it isn't exactly niche.

nowadays
it had a higher rank before
there's an interview where she talks about the most influential magazines when she was growing up and jump wasn't even part of the club, but also there was a big magazine from then that i don't think even exists anymore
which is to be expected i guess, in any field what brand/thing dominates will change across time

>isn't part of the strain the all-nighters?
That isn't the hard part you can tank that with ease before needing caffeine, the pace with the art and deadline stress is. Imagine having to deal with heavy paneling and more detailed art and action sequences. Rumiko never did any of these and if she did that would've truncated her incredible output of different works along the years.

Remember; Inuyasha had way to many pages with 3 panels or less and not very good action sequences, so that's some workload saved. She's quite economical in that regard.

>>280221836
Her biggest strenght was keeping her simplistic art polished; that ain't easy. But comparing that to the demand of other mangas will only leave her looking bad. Also, remember how making MI, a seinen, was seen as unexpected from her. I'm guessing due artstyle among other factors

>>280222011
But was ever at the competitive level of prime SJ; that one had DB, Rokudenashi Blues, JoJo, Slam Dunk and Bastard with others running along iirc. Shonen Sunday doesn't strike to be the home of detailed art works, at least to me therefore asking for info if possible

wikipedia has a chart starting from 1986 for weekly shonen sunday with two distinct columns for circulation vs sales, which shows 105 million sales for the year 2000
wikipedia calls the era with the manga you listed as the golden age for wsj and says 1995 was the circulation peak
apparently the 2000s have been a decline in circulation

if you're actually interested in that type of thing then go digging instead of basing things on what you feel

There was more to it than just the art style, but I understand what you mean. She did say that she wanted to use the same art style in both her serious work and her gag manga:

"Takahashi: I think all of the works I mentioned influenced me a great deal, but one person more than the others was Go Nagai-sensei. I was hooked on his work since Devilman and at the time Shameless School (ใƒใƒฌใƒณใƒๅญฆๅœ’/Harenchi Gakuen) had a really big influence on me. At the time it was really quite a divergence to do both a gag manga and a story manga at the same time. For example, when the same artist does both typically they would completely change their style. But after seeing Nagai-sensei use the same style with both his comedy and serious stories I thought "I could do it as well"."

I'm sure Shonen Sunday had some detailed manga (though maybe in their side magazines), but I am not very well read in that regard. Rumiko does acknowledge that her art pales in comparison to the true greats.

"Takahashi: I'm trying to make it look scary... I'm trying not to make it look dumb... In that sense, I'm trying to make it look scary by using the reactions of the people facing the monsters. In that sense, it's a collaborative work with the reactions of the humans facing the creatures (to make them look scary). After that, I think it's just a matter of creating the scene with pauses, unpleasant smells, and other things like that. But I don't usually think about it that deeply when I draw... But I think yokai are fun to draw."

She also said Golden Kamuy was very scary and super realistic.

doesn't junji ito have a comedy work involving his cat but it's drawn in the same style he uses for his horror?
>In that sense, I'm trying to make it look scary by using the reactions of the people facing the monsters.
rumiko can be decently detailed with viscera when she feels like it, like some shots in inuyasha when yokai are getting torn up
or ripping out people's hearts (literally) or the times when a demon rips out of their human disguise
there's shots like that in mao too
>After that, I think it's just a matter of creating the scene with pauses, unpleasant smells

Decently detailed, but it still is simplified compared to gekida stuff she reads and loves. I don't mind. I think she plays to her strengths and it does work when she deviates a bit, but I get why she downplays her work from a visual standpoint.

viz says hardcover and looking at it closer, the preview image does have that little crease that hardcovers would have
i'm thinking that maybe the cover won't be shiny? hard to tell with preview pics, the ones for the jp version don't show the shine either
you have to look at online sellers who captured the shine in certain angles
but if using a hardcover really helped them shave off thirty dollars then alright

that style of anime production is DEAD
even two consecutive cours is challenging
anyways probably like golden kamuy where some of the one-offs are cut out (some of that cut out material was later released as OVAs though)

Depends entirely on how good the anime is. Much as I love it, Mao is the kind of series that could benefit immensely from an anime adaptation improving on its visuals and stuff. A competent director could make it look very nice and moody while simultaneously masking the talky bits with good framing and editing. My personal approach would probably involve emphasizing the themes of west vs. east and tradition vs. modernity that are inherent in the Taisho era and do already poke through here and there in the series, and highlighting how neither Mao and Nanoka really "belong" to any time period, which would be rich ground for some melancholic romantic storytelling.

>apparently the 2000s have been a decline in circulation
For Shonen Jump? Yeah, it began to die when it got sanitized and had the big 3 as cope. It got worse once the big 3 went away... and Gintama fucked off too another magazine.

>if you're actually interested in that type of thing then go digging instead of basing things on what you feel
Not actually interested beyond the outlier info for context. 2 of the most outstanding works from it are Conan and Rumiko works, not particularly known for their stellar art.

Gin Tama was a huge deal and it was running before Bleach iirc, they call it the most influential manga from SJ and with good reason. It's the most consistent manga I've seen; very few low points, always solid and high highs.

But should've been outshined by the big 3 despite selling +50 million units

Eh, it's one of those older series where we don't exactly know how well it was selling before Oricon started, but around volume 32 it was selling around 400k copies.
What we know is that it has 73 million copies in circulation with 77 volumes, I think it's still selling enough because the previous data for circulation was 58 million and it ended in 2019.
Also it's mainly in Japan since its English edition was interrupted.
