I want to see a new original Mecha anime from Anno
I know that's a tall order
Maybe he has it in him, maybe he doesn't
Either is ok, and I know that's a huge thing to ask

But I like the guy and think he's a great director
Evangelion is a very good show, but it's difficult for me to rewatch with the dark aspects of its occultism and depression related subject matter. The Rebuilds are all over the place, 1 and 2 treat Eva like a fun shonen action show, 3 actively does not want to exist, and 4 is ironically "Eva as you would expect it to be" to its own detriment, but the directing and animation were fun to watch, even if 4.0's ending felt like a shitpost.
I've seen Shin Godzilla and loved it. Not seen his other Shin films, but I trust that they're good.
And I know he was barely involved in Gundam GQuuuuuuX, but he wrote two of the best episodes.

Would love to see him take a crack at something completely new!

Anno couldn't even finish his own Eva rehash. I don't think he has an entirely new story in him. We shouldn't expect anything more out of the rest of his career than him reliving his childhood favorites through his directing career. Which is fine. We got his magnum opus already.

>pic related
Non-creative people always seem to raise this criticism that an artist copied or took influence from another artist or work of art, as if to suggest that this invalidates their creativity.
It is a blurry line between ripoff and homage, but almost all of the best works of art are homage/responses to/emulation of other works of art, with sufficient originality to create something new.

go watch iconic field for now. It's definetly got those gainax vibes. There is a good chance that Yamashita will get the chance to direct his own show, he already has experiencing creating manga and writing.

Anno stopped being a director many years ago. He's just a producer now
