That Aura can maintain a seemingly limitless standing army without any upkeep is OP in the strategic sense. But being able to demand the obeisance, of anyone within her field of view, of anyone other than the best of mages is broken as well. Eyebaling it she has 0.5x Frieren's manapool. It’s completely unbelievable that she thought she could take the mage who took down the Demon King, especially since she beat her in the past. Aura didn't flee because Frieren is a mage who faced her head on her without the backup of warriors and clercs, while Frieren clearly had only ⅕ of Aura's mana. And the thought simply didn't occur to Aura that Frieren was surpressing her mana to the extent that she was.

Why do people care so much about Aura?

They actually go over this in the el Dorado arc. The demon, aura in this case, would need to know what a "good deed" is and demons are literally incapable of thinking in that manner. The el Dorado mayor guy literally had macht make a magic unbreakable vow to never commit "malice" against the humans of his town. The magic worked but Macht had not fucking clue what "malice" was and just did demon shit anyway
