And there's no guarantee there wouldn't have been even more reinforcements the further the sound 4 traveled (hell Kiminaro was one such reinforcement) so they had to catch them quickly before even more enemies joined. The best thing to do was to realize the mission was a lost cause. I mean it's pretty stupid to have sent 5 genin when potentially Kabuto or Orochimaru could show up.

Really, Shikamaru should have frozen Jirobo for Neji. Without plot armor, Neji should just be able to put him into super quick organ failure without much, if any translation force exerted on Shikamaru. Plot wise it would probably end up just being no sold with curse mark 2 BS, but whatever.

I wouldn't say Neji is a gorilla in this situation, he can't tank Naruto's punches. The issue of 100 men vs 1 gorilla is actually harming the punch-proof gorilla. Neji doesn't have that, he has speed, but speed wont save him from the sheer volume and weight of the crowd

I still think Kishi should have had Sakura only tell Naruto + Shikamaru that Sasuke has defected. Naruto / Shika gathers up a team to bring Sasuke back before the higher ups find out and brand him a missing nin, instead of Tsunade's 'we have no jonin lol'
Also Choji should have died in order to develop Shikamaru's character and solidfy the world of shinobi as dangerous. Not like fans would have missed him, anyway. Probably would have made him much more popular of a character.

nta but it makes more sense (instead of Tsunade saying they have no jonin to help), allows for better (not sure if this is the right term) world building in that it shows this isn't a game, people die in this line of work, even kids, and better character development (forcing Naruto to mature and face responsiblity, creates guilt / tragic backstory for Shikamaru) and touches back on the theme Kakashi introduced on abandoning your comrade or following the rules
