The draw of the show is how dark it's willing to go in its frank depictions of suicide and child abuse, and how evil it is willing to make the characters in a relatively grounded setting. Neither of the girls are characterized in any way that doesn't relate to their abuse/bullying/etc. or else set up a tragic event for later. There is some emotional nuance in places, particularly in the subplot that hasn't started yet in the adaptation, but for the most part it goes broad and uncomplicated and is really just about wallowing in pain. And it's good at that.

I don't know. I don't think it's misery porn. To anything that has "-porn" attached to it, I assume it to mean that it exists to just dish out whatever emotion or desire is wanted with nothing to actually think about, relate to or whatever. Takopi I think has more going on that simply showing us little girls suffering. The two things I think that give the show a lot to play with and are interesting is Takopi himself, who effectively is like a kindergarten kid from a magical cartoon world of rainbows and sunshine clashing with serious pre-teen bullying, and discovering how terrifying it is and how difficult it is to stop. Alongside having the bully not just having a tragic story too (which is over-played) but making her tragic story misguided anger at the protagonist, not just in lashing out but actively thinking that she's helping her situation by hurting someone entirely unrelated. Marina and Takopi effectively being mirrors in a way, both of them mentally unequipped to handle the scary situation they find themselves in, both doing things that to them are going to make things better, but all they do is stay the same or get worse. Marina with bullying, Takopi with being too ignorant and naive to understand bullying (and also bashing Marina's head in now.) Of course morally they're very far apart but I think they balance well.

So I don't know. I still think it's pretty fantastic with gorgeous production values and it'll probably be an AOTS contender for sure, it already is I'm just waiting for more stuff to air. I want to rape Marina. Kino title drop.

I was very small, but a big part of why I fought back was because my brother and father told me that I need to do it if I don't want to change school and my brother also told me that he will come if I call him. If they take care of the bully, other bullies will attack me later, that was their logic and i still think it was right.

The word bullying doesn't do justice to how horrible Marina's actions were. Having a troubled family life doesn't excuse her. I can acknowledge the complexity of the situation and that in real life these things have nuance while also being happy that Marina, a fictional character in a fictional story was killed.

Azuma's issues are that he stacked himself up to his brother like his mother instilled in him with the pancake bullshit. When ultimately, all they needed to do was talk. That's why he asked Takopi to tell his past self to fight with his brother. Because when he finally confronted his brother, he realized what an amazing and understanding person he was with how willing he was to listen and accept Azuma's issues.
The whole point of the final chapter is that the true, ultimate Happy Gadget is talking and sharing your issues properly.

Though this message is kinda shafted by how Marina beat the shit out of Takopi when he tried to talk as Shizuka to her. Talking there got him stabbed in the eye.
So maybe the point is more to not just talk but to reach out in a more meaningful way than just insisting things will be fine. Words with conviction rather than platitudes.
