The main difference with hetrom is that in hetroms, the attraction between the guy and the girl is automatically assumed naturally.
In yuri, the average mangaka has to go out of his way to convince the readers/themselves/the characters themselves that the romantic emotions between the girls are strong and resilient enough to compete with a hetrom couple because in yuri mangas yuri relationship are always framed as a deviation from the usual guy/girl dynamics.
This means that an average yuri manga will go out of its way to focus on the character's dialogue/clothing/body language/art/plot/emotional motivations etc. to make the yuri romance as convincing AND interesting and erotically teasing, so a yuri manga will have a more enticing relationship paradigm compared to the usual cliche hetrom stuff.
