what was actually wrong with darling in the franxx?
Was it truly a knockoff evangelion/eureka 7?

Garbage tween drama, poor pacing where it peaked at episode 15 then speedran the ending in the last quarter after 3 slow sol episodes, a terrible trigger meme ay lmao ending, most of the characters just did not fucking matter at all, the action and mech designs were shit, mediocre animation at best, dumb fanservic that hurt it more than help.
But its worst sin was the undeserved hype. It was a highly marketed anime original with a seemingly interesting premise, and it did not deliver on anything.

The shitposting was the worst part, at least the faggot shitposters, which were something like 80%.
Also, 2018 was around the time that /a/ became completely unusable because of faggots and baitposters.

He could have been great if the anime just embraced his suicidal horny madness. It was a jarring disconnect where the writers had him talk like the standard bland good guy protagonist, but he treated everyone around himself like disposable garbage in his pursuit of 02.

To me it felt like the last part was written by someone else entirely. It felt that plot was setting up that the klax (or whatever they were called) were more of a natural threat like a hurricane and the real antagonist/"bad guys" were actually the adults who were sacrificing the kids so they could live in pointless hedonistic pleasure. It felt that the plot was building for the kids to rebel against the adults and take back humanity from the amoral hedonists. But nope, instead you get ayy lmao aliens introduced at the last minutes. Also I think reincarnation endings don't really do well with the west which is what /a/ mainly is, so 02 and Hiro dying still feels pretty shitty and them reincarnating generations later doesn't really feel satisfying.

He wasn't much of a self-insert for any group. People were just disappointed by how he didn't embrace his old self in the second cour, and how the show betrayed everything it had built up to... also in the second cour.
I'm still pissed.

Well, it's a valid argument in many cases, particularly for anime and manga released in the past decade. There's been a huge shift towards MCs who are extreme losers who pair up with domineering waifu characters.
It's actually kinda sad how popular it's become, and how it reflects on the fags who make up the contemporary weeb community.

>There's been a huge shift towards MCs who are extreme losers
This is why it doesn't mean anything on /a/. Self insert can mean a power fantasy character or it can mean a loser character or it can mean a character with little personality. Really it should keep its original meaning as an author's self insert because then it has an understood meaning.

I suppose, but I believe a lot of the loser characters we've seen in anime and manga over the past decade are deliberate self-inserts. As in, it's a self-insert for the author, but also for the intended audience.
I mostly stopped posting on /a/ over a decade ago, but I occasionally drop by, and it disgusts me how much it's changed. I mean, both the medium and the community.
/a/ has become far more reddit than reddit.

Never said /a/ came up with the concept. I even said the original meaning of self insert, which is also what this anon thought>>280283302 i.e. the authors self insert.
>Self-insertion is a literary device in which the author writes themselves into the story under the guise of, or from the perspective of, a fictional character (see author surrogate)

Yes the og meaning which you can't wrap your mind about it works for both the author and the audience. The author is literally part of the audience.

I wonder how Nishigori feels about how he ended his supposed "passion project". The first cour was very successful, and it just kept gaining traction and popularity up until it peaked with ep 13, 14 and 15.
Then he just shat the bed. He could have had a major success, not quite on par with the most top 5 or 10 shows/movies, but right behind them, but instead he just went full retard.

I almost feel that it could have used another cour or two like E7 or Gundam Seed or something. Pacing was really a problem, and spending even a few episodes on slow slice of life stuff near the end rushed everything else.

Nah, I think the length was fine. It's just that the second cour was shit. The lack of bridging following the first cour's conclusion, the awful enemy reveal, and the terrible conclusion that betrays everything the show had built up to.

More episodes could have maybe helped with bridging over from the first cour or maybe allowed some foreshadowing for the enemy reveal. But yeah even the enemy reveal is part of the betrayal and more episodes couldn't fix that.
