It's not that NGE is not DEEEEEEEEP but in all honesty it was not created to truly make sense, even without budget issue.

Not at all. There is a lot of esoteric lore buried in Japanese only spin-offs. Instrumentality being space magic? From NGE 2. Time-loops and the true nature of Kaworu and Shinji's relationsbip? Anima YEARS before the Rebuilds bought it everywhere else. There being a multiverse with some of them being totally bizarre and may or may not be loops? Campus Apocalypse.
Hot take: If time is still looping then It's A Miraculous Win, a fujo wish-fulfillment manga, might be the "current" iteration after the Neon Genesis. I say that because Eva is depicted as fictional and everyone besides the MC is a look-alike.
