Nah, this is obviously setting up the iron spirit being the key here. Otr will launch some big fire attack at the villain who manages to survive it. The villain then gloats about how it was useless and how he's won, only for Otr to reveal that the attack was actually aimed at the forge behind the villain. The fire melts the ice, the iron spirit is freed and that's what turns the tables against the villain. This is like writing 101.

This shit never ever matters in reality. The next highest ranked guy is always 300 times stronger than the last one even if it doesn't make any sense. This guy is being set up as the first real challenge for OTR, something he hasn't had since literally the manga started. I don't see any problem with giving him someone semi-legit as his first meaningful win.

You're too fixated on this enemy being part of some elite group. Notice how the guy says that he's "not foolish enough to attack a spirit without first ascertaining its power". This establishes that spirits are so strong that this elite thinks even a surprise attack against one would be very risky. If he's so wary of spirits then it's hardly inconceivable that a spirit would have the power to defeat him. The MC is inexperienced so he's not going to have an easy time, but he has huge attack power and his element happens to counter ice so he should be able to do big damage if he can just find a single opening to strike. You might say that one member's defeat this early would make the entire elite group look weak, but that's only if you assume they're all equally strong. Crocodile and Doflamingo were both Shichibukai and yet there was a huge difference in power between the two. Crocodile going down pre-timeskip did nothing to hurt Doflamingo's image like 500 chapters later.

The villain retreats when he gets injured and realizes that he's now at a disadvantage. What does this even have to do with worldbuilding?

All the ice blocks Otr cut are falling on the cursed tool in the middle of the pit. The too instantly freezes things so the ice chunks are then getting frozen into a tower. Otr jams his sword into the tower, slowing their fall. The next page, as he's carving through the tower, he cuts the cursed tool, so when the cart lands, they don't get frozen.

Best chapter so far. The story finally feels like an adventure again.
Villain is kind of cool, but the "two horn bad guy" design is starting to feel same-y. Hopefully the future ice demons have more unique designs.
