The Rebuilds are basically a telling of the Eva story in a more "traditional" way, more focused on the worldbuilding and external conflict, rather than the internal "self vs self" of NGE. There's still some of that there, but it's not as much the focus. That's a hard pill for some to swallow, but I like NGE and the Rebuilds for different reasons, kind of how I like Dawn of the Dead '78 and '04 for different reasons, and sometimes I'm in the mood for one over the other.

That's an interesting opinion.
For me, I find EVA really interesting because the show is pretty solid. The presentation is fine, the designs are appealing, the show is created around a weekly presentation, each character gets its own episode, the main narrative is build little by little and all the characters are identifiable, you can easily recognize their role on the story and their main personalities.
I would compared EVA with something like Robocop or Mad Max 1, it's a really entertaining show, makes the best of its material, it's also the ground zero for future media that will be influenced by it.
On the other hand I feel the Rebuilds are Anno pushing his view further, like the artist trying to conclude his work properly. But I will save the rest of my commentary for until I watch all the Rebuild movies.
