This was the only part I actually laughed at. I do hope it gets more funny in future episodes. But it's a comfy show overall, Wako is interesting, and I'll be happy if it's just good characters and the same level of art. They really need to do a better job of introducing the other two mains in episode 2 because I don't really connect with them yet.

I really like this so far
The animation and art style is excellent, as to be expected from kyoani. It feels new and fresh because it's so different from most of the market standard while also feeling nostalgic as it calls back to nichijou. The music is super good, too. And the more serious sentimental scene at the end betwern the two girls was a nice touch

There's just so much soul, especially when the songs are relevant to the episodes.

I like how flat Arawi's style art is, with very minimal scale/depth to the scene, and few curves or perspective tricks. It makes it all look like miniatures in a playhouse, which creates a unique look.

I started to watch it with some reservation, because Nichijou was an important work for me many years ago (to these date, my two only unpublished doujin are from that show), but many anons had been quite clear about how unfunny it was going to be.

Honestly this doesn't feel kyoani-like at all, in terms how the the characters move and the fabric animation. Almost every single work of theirs felt soft and had good weight in how the characters move which is different from inoue-like animation, here they have gone with cartoonish physics to the max.

OP here. I definitely found Nichijou to be very funny. I also rewatched it over the last week ahead of CITY so it's fresh. Still found it very funny. CITY, so far, not very funny, and I think it really is different and trying to be different, and thus a mistake to even compare the two. There are similar elements in terms of jumping between a bunch of random scenes, and character designs, but this show isn't some frantic-paced absurdist joke after absurdist joke mixed with some cutesy slapstick and Hakase being a monster.
I do hope we'll get at least some of that from time to time. The cork and second noodle scene was it. But the rest of the episode was either just comfy or just weird without trying to even tell a joke.
Having re-calibrated my expectations, and rewatched the first episode, I'm in it for the rest. Just going to relax and enjoy the gorgeous animation and characters living their lives. If it makes me laugh, great. If it doesn't, at least it's fun. I'm not familiar with the manga at all, so I think I was just comparing to the wrong thing. Still, I'm hoping this is the floor, and as we get to know the characters better they can play around more with it and be funnier.

Yeah it's not great, but I think it was mostly because the scandal broke ~2 weeks before they released one of the Free! movies that featured his voice acting, and his performance in Oldcodex. Kyoani couldn't catch a break - considering they also had to delay the VEG movie because of covid.
Info on the current state of their marriage is sparse, but as of 2023 they're reportedly still married - probably because they have a child together.

So I just gave this a watch, and my opinion is that it honestly really is kind of bad. I have actually read CITY and like the manga and this follows it slavishly, but the delivery is all wonky. The artwork is gorgeous but it's just so badly directed and dry. Like the manga is formatted in a very specific way to grab your attention and quickly deliver a dramatic punchline and this simply isn't here. It's just totally abysmal. A real shame.

The mangaka actually does animation and it's unironically better than this show.
