just write out each title and a justification for why you're following it
if your reason is kind of weak compared to the others then you can drop it
I for one don't think I actually need to show up for the next episode of The Water Magician

Summer last year was great. Spoilt for choice. Now? Eh, only like 3 shows get me to go "I think I'll keep up with it" while the rest draw blank stares. It seems like a filler season. Then again, so has this whole year. 2024 was abound with great stuff across all seasons. 2026 seems like it'll be a big rebound.

So far the only shows I'm really looking forward to are Silent Witch and Ruri no Houseki, with the latter probably going to be the standout show of the season.

With that being said, I think you usually only find 1 or 2 really great shows per season and that number has been pretty consistent for years, even though the total number of shows in a season fluctuates.

I wouldn´t call the season packed, i don´t think there is that much to watch.

I´m watching Uchuujin Muumuu, Witch Watch, Dr Stone, Kaiju n8, Silent Witch, Clevatess and the time traveling fantasy one (can´t remember the name). I´ll probably watch the 7th prince second season as well and the water magician or whatever that´s called and maybe City.

That´s pretty much it i think. Not great but what can you do...

>hotel inhumans
I think I'll stick with it for a bit longer. I really hate the "assassin" cliche that Japs came up with but we'll see how the rest of the show is.

>necronomico
I just didn't like the look of it.

>nine ruler
I'm enjoying it. It's really got that "VN" feel with the way the plot moves along.

>ame to kimi
I liked the manga, I think it's a decent adaptation and I'm a sucker for iyashikei.

I get that different things will attract the attention of different people but this discrepancy is almost unfathomable to me. I just don't see how summer 2024 could be considered great. It wasn't just a weak season. It was weak relative to 2024 as a whole. Meanwhile, the shows I'm excited for this season are piling up. How did everything get so fragmented? We used to be able to have a consensus on some things like how 2006 and 2011 are among the best years for anime.

They produce a fuckton of series a season now and just throw everything at the wall to see what sticks. Even going back a few years you'll see just how much more gets churned out now

I wrote mine up and was able to kill off some items from my list just as I thought I could. Now post yours and we can discuss each other's!

>DanDaDan
A chic modern gyaru who happens to be of a traditional religious household and gifted with spiritual powers is peak gap moe, and the entire rest of the show hasn’t yet gotten annoying enough to give up now
>Kisekoi
Marin is just too powerful of a romcom love interest to give up on catching up
>Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku
Refined private school maidens and delinquents with a heart of gold are the best pairing
>Aobuta
Haven’t finished the three-episode rule yet and am looking forward to seeing the fight scene in context, probably dropping afterwards
>Yofukashi no Uta
Already a perfect representation of the night life aesthetic, now exploring the more intimate tragic romance aspects, also Mirage is an excellent OP for the mood and I won’t apologize for liking it more than Daten
>Witch Watch
Consistently funny gag manga even if not all of the jokes hit, and when they do the laughter is uproarious
>The Water Magician
The next big battle iyashikei? I’m not sure if I need it
>Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra
Atou (Atu?) is so fucking hot that she has to be acknowledged even if there is literally nothing else going for this
>A Couple of Cuckoos
Hiro is a perfect character made even more perfect by being a miko, but two characters forced together by external powers but learning to love each other anyway is also good, so are delinquent parents
>Gachiakuta
Bones battle shounen with a cool dark aesthetic, I forget whether I like this kind of thing or not
>Secrets of the Silent Witch
Witch-themed narou are normally pretty fun, though I’m not as engaged with it as other anons. Friday is going to be lighter when I drop some other shows so it’s no big burden

I have high hopes for new saga and isekai mokushiroku mynoghra as we get more eps. I love fantasy so much, bros.

>Kijin Gentosho
Carryover from Spring. Alternates between comfy depressing drama to hardcore depressing drama, and has a nice jidaigeki aeshtetic that makes it a highlight of a slow day
>Kanokari
I actually like Chizuru as a character and her and Kazuya as a couple, and the other girls contribute interesting drama as their respective interests collide. I only wish the pace wasn’t so insultingly slow. Saved by Tuesday also being a slow day
>Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter
The way MC confidently operates around underaged girls who have the hots for him is amazing to watch
>New Saga
Mankind’s futile struggle against fate is a classic theme and a time travel plot in a fantasy setting stands out against typical isekai
>The Summer Hikaru Died
Horror anime is rare and precious, and boy anime is rarer than it should be. Still need to sit down and watch the episode though
>Tougen Anki
Might be a redundant shounen dark fantasy but I might have space for it on Friday
>Summer Pockets
The meta mystery of the island feels far more interesting than any of the girl routes have been, but the girls are also nice, so I’m looking forward to how this second cour develops
>Clevatess
Impressive retro trad fantasy, and plots where an evil lord is humanized into domestic settings like child rearing make for nice comedy
>Watanare
Funny yuri harem comedy, lack of comment is not necessarily lack of quality
>Watari-kun
Obnoxious boundary-pushing childhood friends are cute. Fits right into Casual Friday
>The Shy Hero and the Assassin Princesses
Absolutely off the rails in terms of visuals and plot, but Saturday is busy so it might get cut
>Mikadono Sisters
The romcoms of the season are nicely spread out throughout the week so that I can just watch all of them without much thought. I guess the tall one with the short purple hair is hot? I did see a trailer but I forgot everything about it

The "community" is a lot bigger and there's less of a focus on a standard canon of works everyone should have watched so there's a much wider variation of taste. Also there are so many shows and people tend to fixate on the few shows they like rather than the many shows they didn't care about.

With that being said, what did you think was good about Summer 2024? That might be a good way to gauge where you stand, although I agree that it was kind of bland overall. For my part the shows I liked in that season were:

Wistoria
Make Heroine
Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi
Giji Harem
Delico's Nursery

Anime amount bloat is genuinely becoming a problem
The amount of shows is getting too big and people will have to filter them out somehow and when watching the first ep and even the trailer becomes too much they will start just going for what's already popular/trending
You can already start to see this with the amount of tiktok dances in OPs

bro, summer 2024 was very strong all things considered. atri, makein, monogatari, elusive samurai, shoushimin.. all those were on saturday alone. boku no tsuma, bye bye earth, dungeon people, debugger isekai, giji harem, gimai, isekai shikkaku, mayopunch, cafe terrace s2, oshi no ko s2, alya, spice and wolf, fable, shikanoko, shinmai ossan, vtuber...
there might not have been tons of masterpieces but still a very strong season, you could easily find yourself at least 5 shows to watch if you're really picky. it was legit one of the best summers I remember.

>Takopi’s Original Sin
Instant AOTS, only this low on the list because it’s sorted by popularity and it’s hurt by ONA discrimination
>Betrothed to My Sister’s Ex
Mistreated By My Family and Sold To a Foreign Kingdom kino, stfu main character though
>Broken Saintess
Saintess kino and revenge kino in one package? If only I could see it
>Detectives These Days Are Crazy
Alternate funny 2japan4u gag manga
>Solo Camping for Two
Slice of life but with adults? Might win on execution but might also be a quick drop
>With You and the Rain
Aesthetic-dominated anime with pretty 30-something hag character, chances of her constructed reality crumbling around her lesser than last season
>Game Center Girl
Culture shock, miscommunication comedy, interracial romance? Shame she isn’t an elf
>Bad Girl
Extremely horny yuri comedy with a moe aesthetic, can coexist with Watanare since they seem to do different things
>Ugly Hayamin
Should like in theory but Hayamin’s character is unbearable. Want to see more of the boy before I drop it though
>Nukitashi
The proper ecchi of the season, looks ridiculous and funny
>City
It’s KyoAni! Wouldn’t give it another thought but for the provenance
Nyaight of the Living Cat
Just how long can they keep up this joke? The cat cafe setting is comfy too
>Haigakura
A BL fantasy? Interesting on its face
>Hotel Inhumans
Continuing the hotelier anime trend, but this one is the Continental from John Wick? Need to get around to it still
>Kamitsubaki City Under Construction
A high-energy post-apocalyptic setting with a strong visual and animation style? Could be the next Momentary Lily or just a flimsy vehicle for vtubers, only time will tell
>Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show
Complete visual chaos in a way that is pleasing to me
>Harmony of Mille-Feuille
I just remember Sachiko’s mom making mille-feuille for Yumi in Marimite and nothing in the trailers goes against this association
>the gay Doga Kobos
need I say any more than those words

Haven't watched this one but I might try it in the future, but it's low on my priority list. I think the best anime of the season was Kimi ni Todoke season 3 but it was a netflix batch dump which kind of ruined the experience. So among the weekly airing anime, it was Mahoaku, but that was a half-length episode show. So that leaves Shoushimin for regular full-length weekly airing shows. I'll also give a mention to Sakuna-hime for being a fun but ultimately inconsequential vidya adaptation.

But it's not my main hobby. I also read manga and light novels and heavy novels and play visual novels and JRPGs and gacha games.
The only otaku hobbies I managed to stay out of are idols and vtubers, but since I've learned the Japanese language I feel like those are also slowly becoming inevitable, only being kept at bay by my physical lack of time.

Gachiakuta could be interesting
Hotel Inhumans also could be interesting
CITY is a must-watch unless they completely fuck up
and Mynoghra as the requisite least-offensive isekaislop of the season

everything else ranges from "meh" to utter trash

don't get me wrong, I like garbage seasons since they let me work through the backlog

Out of the 3 I thought I’d drop, being Nerconomico, Nyaight of the Living Cats, and Mattaku Saikin, 2 made it through.
For Necronomico, it being a death game original and the neatish weird designs have me interested enough to continue. Hope it ends up being good. Also the subs being fucked was funny.
The Neko anime understands how stupid it is and is actually a bit of fun so far, hope it goes crazier.
Mattuku just isn’t clicking with me comedy wise and character wise, the and the animation being perfectly average doesn’t help it, unless it swerves into better territory, it’s dropped next episode tomorrow. (It’s reminding me a bit of Shikanoko too)

Yeah the MC looks kind of stupid and I was a bit concerned at first by his appearance but so far he's been alright.

As for Clevatess and New Saga, I read the manga for both. New Saga is finished (about 110 chapters) and the adaptation looks kind of generic and a bit cheap so I didn't bother. As for Clevatess, I felt that the adaptation had decent production values but that the manga is just more slick so I decided not to bother retreading old ground. Plotwise Clevatess is probably on top, followed by New Saga (although the ending was quite rushed) and then Heian.

It particularly irks me, not sure about him, how these CGDCT series just get churned out with evermore niche topics that a passive watcher might find mildly interesting, like if you just let the youtube algorithm run on its own while you sleep and see what it finds for you when you wake up, but then the autists who watch these things won't shut up about how hot whatever basic ass design for the girls they drew up for them are even though girls of the isekai or the romcoms of the season are obviously hotter

Huh, never thought of it that way before. I guess it is worth wondering how much the original creator is actually invested in the topic. As for designs, to me it's more an issue of production values. I'd prefer a well-animated basic design than a horribly animated fancy design.

All the time. When I finish a good one I think what threads for this used to be like and it kinda stings that I wasn't there. You can always watch anime, but you can't always participate in discussions in the height of it's relevancy. If you don't care about it you do you, but for me it's part of the fun. I probably wouldn't have liked Shoushimin as much if I wasn't there in the threads when it aired, they were so fucking fun.

there's maybe 200 essentials that everyone has to watch before you get down to a baseline seasonal terebianime crud that has always existed and will always exist, and it's a six o' one whether any one anime handled its themes better than any other, and in that case it's better to favor the ones that are fresh that people want to talk about

Airing threads are fun but having to watch 40+ shows every season within a couple of hours of airing so I can catch the threads would be more stressing than enjoyable for me.
Not saying that it's wrong or anything like that, but I don't really care about "missing out" on threads especially since I frequently watch stuff from one or two seasons ago.

That's fair. I find that sometimes I enjoy a show more if I watch it in a more comfortable time than one after the other, so there's always a trade off, especially in packed seasons like this. I always kinda settle on the shows I wanna watch as soon as they air for the threads, and shows I can watch later if I don't care about the threads.

I always cut away those shows from genres that I don't care about, I have been watching seasonal anime for almost 20 years so I know what I like, plus sometimes I just go and read/play the source material so sometimes I don't even watch the anime.
These days I focus mostly on anime originals and robot anime.

My parents have been florists since before I was born, and since I dropped out of uni, I ended up working for them.
My friend offered me a "job" back in May but days before I was going to quit my current job Mom had a stroke. Today marks a month since she passed away.
After that a coworker quit, and another one was let go for various reasons.
Dad says he is still willing to let me quit, but I'm not so willing anymore.

Reading manga adaptions is so boring so I skip most unless I really like ten sour e material which eliminates a lot shows. The light novel adaptations are fine because reading books and watching TV are too different. For LN derived works there's silent witch but I've never been a fan of those type of shows. In terms of originals there is Necronomico which looks to be eh and Turkey! which I'll give a try and also P&S which will hopefully be good.

I mean I get this but the amount of good recent anime isn't that big either.
I will not claim I have watched everything but I've browse every seasonal charts from 1990 to now and even if there wasn't much great anime in the 90s compared to this decade there was also much less dogshit shows as there are now, the ratio remains the same.
Before it was 1 EVA for 10 mediocre anime and now it's 10 good shows among 60 that are mediocre or bad.

Also, there's 40+ shows but only 2 or 3 good enough for aots/aoty.

I couldn't dig Food Court, the OP was cute but if it's just those two shooting the shit every week I'll probably drop it

It's a good manga, but stuff like that is hard to adapt without pacing issues.

there is literally no reason to preemptively put currently airing anime on your backlog. If it's one of the 6-10 series that passes Sturgeon's Law then it's important enough to watch live, and if it isn't then it's not going to be worth revisiting after it's already gone stale.

True that. After 13 years of seasonals, the only one I ever watched after the fact was FAG and I absolutely regret it since the threads apparently were amazing.

Watching seasonal anime is mostly about novelty, hype, and having something to talk about. If I were actually prioritizing quality, I’d stick to completed series.
