I have a schizo overthought theory about Kishi's intelligence.

Shikamaru is written as the lazy genius, the shogi player whose fights play out as chess matches in their own right, with him almost always winning with that, "cool", come-from-behind, victory snatched from the jaws of defeat moment. Well, most fights in Naruto go like that I guess.

Now I've never played shogi, but they tell me it's a lot like chess. And chess matches dont really go like this. With two high level players it's very likely they both have a very good impression what the other is capable of, based on board state. If one is on the backfoot, it's unlikely he's going to "surprise" his opponent with a checkmate out of nowhere. This is why amateur games go till the last move of the last piece available and pros can tell you after losing a couple pieces that the board cannot be recovered.

But it's boring to just show the memorization of maneuvers, the practice games, the actual work that goes into being good at something. It's much more interesting to just have your character be a stoic genius who "figures out" at the last second how to win everything.

Shikamaru is almost always on the backfoot against a superior opponent, and manages to win almost every time. My point is, Kishi thinks hes writing this interesting parallel to shogi when I'm guessing that no such parallel exists and he's just too brainlet to even know it.

To be fair, the Sharingan wasn't always busted.
When it started out, it was just a really good eye that was really good at seeing things. But the Byakugan was better because it was better at seeing.
The Sharingan only became busted because Kishimoto kept buffing the shit out of it with powers completely unrelated to sight.
And the Byakugan had to get subtly nerfed because, as you said, knowing things is the most dangerous power against the plot.

I recall Neji using 128palms in the anime but I don't think he did that in the manga, didn't see it here in these chapt'ers. I believe Neji vs Kidomaru was released as a 2parter episode as a New Years special when it came out so maybe they wanted to hype it up more. Honestly this doesn't matter much but I think there was a plotpoint where Hinata can just barely use 32palms so Neji being able to pull off 128 instead of just 64 makes Hinata look like a bigger shitter, but the gap from 32 to 64 isn't so bad
