They don't. Rance is created as an antitype of those traditional heroes of JRPG. The early Rance was a rapey wildman but as time goes by he becomes more measured and somewhat soft which makes him more relatable to you, but he's not a traditional epic hero for that exact reason. He is more like a reflection and embodiment of desire of modern males, not classic heroes who overcome Herculean ordeal.

They're aggressive characters that take what they want and kill people in their way, but without being full blown cackling and planning to blow up the world. I'm currently going through the series, I beat Rance's 01/02/03, IV, 5D and now I'm on VI (at the very early stages, just escaped the slave camp). Rance seems to slowly become a bit more humanized as time goes by, not "good", just humanized. Still a vile rapist but seems to be more "reasonable". I imagine Rance prior to VI would be freaking out more about having to be stuck with a bunch of men but he's at least able to adapt to the situation here better. In 5D you see more of that side of him where he clearly favourites Sill. When she's trapped he even wants Athena 2.0 to stay with her so she's not lonely. Rance is Yin and Sill is his Yang. By all means with the rest of Rance's character you wouldn't expect him to act that way when it comes to Sill especially with the rest of their relationship. They really are a perfect yin and yang.
