I know it’s become a joke to say but literally what even is Fate and how do I get into it? The only things I know about it are Astolfo, Arthur is a woman, and a meme were a guy shoots a massive beam out of his sword with the caption “me when I see black people.” I tried to ask a friend but he basically just told me to not even try because apparently its really difficult.

You read the VN. You can either play the official Remastered version or the unofficial Ultimate Edition. Remastered generally has a better translation, but it's also based on the all-ages rerelease which has significant plot changes in one of the routes. Remastered has mods to fix a stupid name change and to restore the original soundtrack but not the uncensored text. Both can switch to the Japanese equivalents for reference.

You have a good friend and he's right. The problem comes from Japan not giving a fuck about continuity and accuracy and adapting random parts of the VN, most of which not even good adaptions either. Its like trying to connect all the DC comic franchises tier mess. Anime wise its such a mess that its better to tell people to just read the original VN, the prequel Lite Novel Fate/Zero, and maybe the sequel Hollow Ataraxia and forget everything after. You can't even recommend the anime, they are that bad and miss the point of the story.

Around 2009 or 2010 is when the series had its 2nd wind and started selling out with endless spinoffs, gachashit, flashy beam spam ufotable anime adaptions, and is when all the normalfag coomer shit started that you're familiar with. If you want to dive into that you can just play the mobile gacha and forget everything else.

I read the VN 20 years ago when I was a boy and I was one of those really hooked up chuuni Nasuboys, which was really prominent and phenomenal in the 2000s, it truly was "The Nasu era." Also played Ataraxia when it came out but it slowly wore off from my mind as I grew older so I didn't read Zero and haven't followed the franchise ever since. Still my childhood memory.

I suddenly got a flashback to that horror story of some Japanese guy taking out loans to get one copy of Skadi. FGO has some great moments and fun story chapters but being attached to a predatory gambling system really puts a damper on things. They at least implemented a pity system a while ago, as stingy as it is, and power creep hasn't been too bad. Still I advise people to be wary of anything gacha related.

The premise is cool. So much so that it's almost as if it was invented as something tailor made to make something that sounds like it would be really good in a (gacha) game.
But of course the timeline makes that utterly impossible to have happened. But it's actually incredible how lucky the premise fits.
It's like he wandered into winning a billion dollar lottery completely by mistake by just coming up with some cool and interesting world building.
In the end, it almost seems like a waste. It's alright stuff, but the concept is better than its execution imo.

Read Fate/stay night, then Fate/hollow ataraxia, and you're done with that most would consider to be the quintessential parts of the IP.
You can also read/watch Zero before or after HA as dessert. It's Urobutcher slop so turn off your brain, forget about the characters being dumb for most of the plot, and have fun.
After that is when you get into the realm of *other* Fate works. At that point it's entirely up to you to decide what to consume and what to like. Some fans think Prillya's the best part of the series past SN, others think it's the Extra series of vidya, etc. etc. All of them are about stuff unrelated to the setting of FSN/FHA/FZ, so if you don't want to leave 90s/00s Fuyuki behind don't bother with them.

I forgot this but if you're even REMOTELY interested in it, read Tsukihime (the original since the remake's still incomplete) after FHA and watch Carnival Phantasm. It's probably the best Fate anime from an adaptation/source material standpoint and objectively the best Tsukihime anime. You won't be disappointed

I’ve been going through Tsukihime and the fan disc, I like it pretty well. Does it make sense for me to say I like the concepts and characters, rather than the whole thing? Will probably try Fate after, assuming the quality is at a similar level.

The feeling's mutual. Most of Nasu's stuff boils down to "7/10 premise with 10/10 ideas and 6/10 execution = 9/10 LN/VN". If you liked Tsuk and its fandisc you'll like FSN and FHA. In a worst case scenario, you'll finish reading it thinking it was a slightly worse and shonen-ier Tsuk

It does. The prose, plot, and structure were extremely messy, and the art and music were poor even for 2000. Fate's word count is still bloated, but it otherwise makes big strides in all those areas. After that, it just comes down to taste.

If you had read Take Moon, you would know it was a horrid adaptation of it. The original manga was mainly Tsukihime-focused, but he skipped the vast majority of the Tsukihime chapters and made strange alterations to the ones it did adapt like removing characters or showing the same scene several times in a row with minor differences. The Fate segments had several major differences too, like the entire anime-original Lancer subplot and the director deliberately sabotaging Sakura's portrayal in it because he was projecting his ex onto her. Also, the Neco OCs that had zero connection to anything from Type Moon unlike Neco-Arc and Neco-Arc Chaos and were just pure lolrandumb one-note cartoon characters.
