I feel this way about Lucky Star too, that being that the anime improved upon the manga a lot. That isn't the case with a lot of things though.

What happened?

I just finished watching Season 3 and all the spin-offs, and I can confidently say Akari is the cutest cinnamon roll in anime history. She deserves nothing but love and protection.
