I can think of one way to make Shikamaru viable in a fight against Kidomaru like this.
Make up a Nara clan technique that isn't seen because it's considered outdated, but works for this situation where instead of controling shadows, it gives the user a sort of sonar that requires darkness to be used. Shikamaru can't see in the dark, and he can't use his other shadow jutsu because there aren't distinct shadows to use, but he can at least use this jutsu to avoid Kidomaru's attacks for a while. Obviously, he can't keep it up forever, so he uses bombs to make a hole in the canopy to get enough light to give Kidomaru a shadow. This still doesn't really work since he runs out of stamina, but somebody can come rescue him because they heard the explosion and saw the smoke.
