The lower nobility of the forest cantons.
After all, the whole fucking dispute between the forest cantons and the habsburgians is because the habsburgian needed money to finance their wars against the other prince electors to become emprah of the holy roman empire, and the forest canton elites didn't want to pay more money they're earning from the lucrative trade routes between the north and Italy.

I've already said that the peasants are WAY too organized for a real mob. But I'll add that crossbows were typically used by professional soldiers (mercenaries) because of how much they cost. A peasant mob would be using traditional bows.
Anonymous No.280451218 >>280451994
>>280450839
Well, in the real history, the uprising was done by minor local nobles using peasants who most often worked part-time as mercenaries, so they were all trained in the art of war.
In this story, the peasants did train in Italy before they started the rebellion to explain their training.

It was not a merepeasant rabble uprising where untrained mobs of angry famished mountain folks committed random acts of violence and brigantry.

using bows in combat/hunting is WAAAAAY easier than using bows to hit a stationary target in a competition, especially shortbows. you don't need "training" just practice. and most peasants would be used to using shortbows to hunt small game for food
