I really like Dandadan, and I do think this was well-executed as a backstory and plot point. But I do agree that this episode is massively overrated. It's the same cheap drama that I'd criticize Violet Evergarden for. It's a generic tragic event with no substantial connection to the overarching story. It'll never carry the same weight as an emotional moment that's properly built up with a character you know and relate to. But again, it's nothing more than a simple backstory for a minor arc so it does its job.
