I've recently watched Blue Sub no.6
Despite its obvious flaws, janky CGI, and somewhat simplistic story, I still feel somewhat inexplicably drawn to it. It just feels soulful.
I wanted to read more about the process behind creating it.
From what I read on Wikipedia, it is based on a manga published in 1967 (1 year after the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, I would imagine it's no coincidence, though I would love to find a confirmation somewhere)
It says that the manga got remade along with the OVA, which makes me wonder who came up with the character designs and what inspired them (I really really enjoyed Mutio, Verg, and Amonyushuu). If there's any interviews available online or something like that I would love to hear about it.

I found this cool artbook related to the series:
https://e-hentai.org/g/961331/1f300a59f9/

I'm pretty sure it's official, the art is the same, and the artists listed are the same as the ones responsible for the official series.

The character designs were made by Range Murata and Takuhito Kusanagi. Looking at their other works, I would imagine Range was responsible for the general style of the series and Takuhito for the more 'monstrous' elements. Though again, it would be cool to dig up more information.

What makes you call the story simplistic?

I just feel like the world and the conflicts weren't fleshed out properly. The villain's motivations seemed cartoonish, the forced evolution or whatever that does nothing to drive life forward. The ending felt rushed too. I just feel like 2 or 4 more episodes could have really made it a lot better.

Takuhito has a few other artworks that support my theory that he was the person behind at least Mutio's design.

The hair, the fins, and the melded feet seem very characteristic.

This one I found reminds me a lot of Rosine from Berserk. I wonder which was drawn first.

I can barely remember the show but I've had the two OSTs on regular rotation for over 20 years now.

All the humans (and Mutio) were designed by Range Murata afaik. I've seen at least a few sketches of by Murata of Mutio in my collection... Unless those were just character sketches, not design sheets.

Also, love Takuhito's aesthetic for the demihumans. The ghost ship is such a striking presence.
The scene with Hayami on the raft at night as the ship sails by with all the Demihumans on board is just so fucking striking.

There is a little movie about the making of it which i can only assume was included on the dvd/bluray.
I tried reading the manga years ago and it was so different than the ova i dont think its fair to even say they are the same thing.

I found this pic and it's what made me doubt who designed Mutio
It's possible Takuhito made the design concept and Murata did the animation reference... It's hard to say

I was TLing to English from my lang, I suppose it means the same thing in the end

Here's a practice model I made of Mutio.
This was more in my style, but I plan on redoing it some time soon since I got some feedback from /3/... Will probably repaint the whole texture too

I DL'd the first link's extra .iso file and got 20 minutes of this ultra-mid girl talking in a really high pitched voice and very little production stuff.
Most of it was just a promo and cutscenes from the Dreamcast game

The early days of CGI were kind of interesting. It wasn't the short cut it is today. You get the sense of creators discovering and experimenting with a new tool.

That 2nd link seems to have something like it, not subbed though.
The full making-of on the Spanish rip is 47min, this one is 17min. Seems to use similar clips though I haven't watched through them all

Cool scans though
Kinda crazy how they couldn't seem to decide on how Mutio's face markings should look
