did anyone try to speculate about Gauna's nature? Part of the point is their very inscrutability hence the Lem reference, but there's some food for thought there.
Life can't really exist without some basic inherent software to direct it and some reproductive function. One likely inherent drive of gaunas is energy, hence they flocked to unnatural density of Higgs particles on Earth, and then leftover space vessels.
Also curiosity, that'd answer why they disassembled earth instead of licking clean its surface and moving on
But otherwise it looks like it's a life-form that went all in for mimicry without having much a lot of independent capacity.
Maybe they first got out of their ancestral gravity well by copying their neighbor's nascent space program

They don't seem malicious to me - I don't think they even possess the sentience for that - so at worst I'd peg them as basically animals acting off base instincts.

In line with nihei's fondness for these kinds of themes of inscrutability though, I think it's possible they're actually trying to communicate with humanity. They just have no way of acting in a manner that humans wouldn't perceive as aggression due to the vast gulf in biology and culture.
