Japan refers to this as adolescence. It is something to be grown out of. During their childhood to late teens, girls can grow extremely close to each other. Not in a sexual way, but in an emotional way. They support each other and care deeply for each other. This used to be more common in the west before the alphabet movement forced sexual identities on women/girls who hold hands. Guys have the same thing with their best friend, just with less hand holding, unless you're indian then even more hand holding. Turns out humans are social animals that like companionship even without the prospect of mating.
