All right, this thread has finally tipped me into action. I'm going to make an Asuka & Rei folder within my /a/ folder. Rather than making a separate folder for each of them, I'll make a single folder for the both of them. It feels appropriate.

Trips of truth. The idea of them being friends is very attractive. I think because it doesn't happen in the anime. It's like Shinji/Asuka, or Shinji/Misato. The potential is there but it's never realized, so art that depicts it being realized satisfies us.
Eva is about unrealized potential, really, if you think about it. I'd argue that's its overarching theme, or at least one of them.

Asuka makes an effort to be friendly with Rei, at least at first. Frankly Rei doesn't get blamed as much as she should for the sour relations between them, she could have at least been more polite rather than brusquely brushing Asuka off.
