I've had this anime in the back of my mind since it was announced, and would have watched it as a normal bowling anime. I saw that there was a twist right before watching it and was fully spoiled half way though the episode because I glanced at the show's description to remember a character's name.

Oh damn, you're right. But the characters are nothing like the references.

The staff and cast actually seem pretty confident on the script, and this is the writer's first anime because she normally does live action doramas. The studio has enough confidence to call it a "youth bowling epic taiga drama". The PV also also has an interesting hook with them befriending a family doomed to a tragic fate and them having to decide if they want to change the future and potentially erase themselves or keep everything the same and return without changing anything.

Kosaka-kun is almost certainly a guy, although we had no 100% confirmation. We're talking about Suguri from the past, who certainly looks like a guy, but it's plausible that Suguri could end up being a reverse trap (technically voiced by a female voice actor, although that's common for young male characters).
On the website in Suguri's profile it's stated that Nozomi is attracted to Suguri's looks.

Sadly no English version of the sengoku characters' profiles which might have confirmed the gender, but English translations made by the Japanese are also bullshit a lot of the time, so yeah. We'll have to see.
