This episode is a way better representation for the overall tone of the series compared to the last episode.
Guess they're afraid most people won't be interested unless they front load the battle shonen story early in the season.

So what's the plot. Guy becomes a doll and?

Comedy wouldn't be the first thing to come to my mind when I think of Nube, because it's just a repeat of the same gags like Nube scaring the hot teacher or Kyoko beating up Hiroshi because she's a tsundere.

It's still a large part of Nube, just like the ecchi. Nube was never purely a hotblooded shounen or horror series.

Oh, the third episode is already out. I just watched the first two episodes. It feels completely different from the manga, like, way more serious but I'm liking so far. The camera shots and general silence of the soundtrack outside action scenes give a cool mysterious vibe to the anime. I'm going to watch the third now.

I am. I think it's pretty enjoyable for being a slightly more serious take on Nube, but it's not going to gain much traction. Bitter nostalgiafags are clearly already tired of shitposting about it, and new fans already have their own supernatural horror shit.

I don't know how the old anime adapted it but going from the manga, Izuna appears around chapter 70 iirc. Tamamo becoming a doctor is nearly 100 chapters into the manga and he's already one in the anime implying that they're going to cover the doctor Tamamo chapter at some point. Rokurokubi Miki happens in chapter 32 which is pretty ahead for a episode 4. But since Tamamo part as changed, it's possible that they won't follow chapter chronology.
