Though not be entirely accurate, the Imperial Court of feudal Japan is often compared to the Papacy. All Japanese samurai lords, including the Tokugawa clan, were courtiers, at least in name. Thus, some important decisions ultimately required the Emperor's approval. It's okay for historical emperors to be disrespectfully portrayed, although you'd get a lot of outrage for such extreme flaws, especially since there's no official historical source for it (those records have certainly been sanitized.)

Historical emperors are fair game. At least far enough back, meaning roughly 100-150 years. The Showa Emperor (Hirohito) is not yet fair game, but his father, the Emperor Taisho, has been fair game for some years now. Though as far as I remember, they still don't acknowledge his weirdness. The man seems to me to have been severely autistic.

Emperor Komei will be a relevant character in the next volumes.

First, I apologize. I misunderstood. Apparently, the awakiri process was developed after the Tokugawa era.
Awakiri is literally a process used to remove bubbles from batter. The method varies from shop to shop. Some bakers do it repeatedly while baking, while others do it just once before putting the batter in the oven. In recipes for home use, it is usually omitted. Some people say it would be reasonable to strain the batter instead.

Note that he calls the shogun the "tykoon", which is probably supposed to be "taikun". He was using "ziogoon", but someone told him taikun was the proper name so he changed it.

He doesn't seem to have been all that startled with Iesada's odd behavior, more like he assumed that was just some Japanese custom.

I only skimmed through the bits leading up to his meeting with Iesada for the purposes of this thread, but it looks like an interesting book. I'll have to read more.
