My reasoning for it in hindsight is that Sasuke would be like a stepping stone to attaining even stronger bodies—like the other members of akatsuki. Itachi was always implied to be the ultimate prize he wanted but had no chance of ever getting in his current state.

Unironically all of this is explained in the manga.
He wants more time to learn all the techniques in the world so he does body hopping for immortality. The Sharingan conveniently copies jutsu, so it's the optimal choice. He needs to arbitrarily wait 2 years between switching bodies so what the fuck is he going to do other than train Sasuke for 2 years? The rest is just subjective stuff so I don't need to really go over that. It's true that Orochimaru's motivations don't really work that well as a villain though.

Would the sound 4's moves count as sage jutsus if they were used during their second transformed state? Since the curse mark is giving them sage chakra, could their attacks hit a ten tails jinchuriki or petrify Pain's Preta Path like how Naruto did?

The thread is already ending but i can't help but bring up the one thing that bothered me all through the last two chapters. Can we talk about how misguided the whole deconstruction of Byakugan's weakness was? Kidomaru bases his entire strategy on it but the truth is, he didn't have to. It wasn't that miniscule blind spot that nearly did Neji in, it was staying in one place like autistic retard. And his kaiten's weakness goes uncommented on, and he never really takes steps to improve it.

For as much as Kishi wanted Choji to be a thing (InoShikaCho in general, really), I still think that comparing Choji and Neji's fights - primarily which parts of their personalities that they're being challenged by and what their opponents represent - and seeing how Neji's struggles feel a lot better than Choji's tells me that for as much shit that Kishi gets in regards to writing female characters, I honestly don't think he really gets why his popular/better male characters are all that liked either, characters like Neji, Lee, Gaara, etc. were probably just flukes that he didn't really understand why they worked
