Getter Robo's anime sucks. I say that as someone that grew up with Monster of the Week anime/toku. The format really has hard baked limitations.
Of course the manga is better but then you're better off looking at Shin Getter if you want to trace what Gurren Lagann is really outright stealing (and trying in some ways to be the spiritual final act Shin Getter never got) vs the more general inspiration of things they liked as kids.

Then it "keeps" you in with the most surface level storytelling ever so it can convince dumbasses that what they're watching has actual substance. Around 16 I grew out of shit like gurren lagann which is just retarded super robot fights with no depth and a few years later I grew out of dora since the thematic depth was lacking in later seasons. Nah, 15 years after watching I still rate is as one of my all-time favourites. The arc with Rossiu being a mopey cunt drags it down a bit, but it's still an all-time great. Also, TTGL is inspired by many things besides Getter Robo, but it wears its inspirations with sincerity.
