I was hoping to bait people with the Fahrenheit conversion, but I skimmed the episode and it was set to 24.0C/75F earlier. I suppose the implication is that the dad wants the house to be cool when he's around, but explicitly makes her mom turn it off when he's not around. I feel like this show has tapped in to something very rare. It fucks your mind up by giving extremely mixed signals at once and it causes even more distress. You know how horror music using has low and high tones? This is it, but in visual form. When Takopi finds Shizuka hanging from the ribbon of reconciliation and was naively tell her she's silly for using it wrong, that was more fucked up than anything I've seen in ages. It did a full 360 from scary to scary, passing by comedy just to throw you for a loop.

So the Japanese material calls Shizuka's workplace a kabakura, implying she's a hostess who just happens to also have dates with Marina's dad, so hostess/mistress at best, which makes sense that she would nonchalantly say that she would go apologize to the mom about Shizuka's dog biting Marina.
But Crunchyroll translated it as escort and the mom accused the father of spending money on whorehouses.

I actually went through schooling in Japan. In my case, there was pretty much no bullying because the teacher would have reaped you a new asshole if they found out you were bullying someone. The downside is instead of your classmates, it was the teacher you should be scared of as mine was almost military-like in strictness.

Takopi's Original Sin is an exploration of the human condition. One of my favorite manga ever, and I'm happy the anime follows the original work in a faithful manner. Good adaptation. The payoff in the end is great in my opinion

I personally experienced both sides of the coin. When I was 5/6 years old some guys in my class picked on me, hit me and some even stripped me naked and pinched my nipples. The teacher had a grudge against me for throwing up in the middle of the school recital so when I complained to her she would yell at me or tell me it was my fault and that I was overreacting.
On the other hand when I was 9 or 10 and at another school I had a teacher who was very kind and nice and genuinely loved kids, when you were alone she would play with you and would stand around waiting when a child's parent didn't come to pick them up.
I genuinely believe that in environments that involve children, teachers should be people who genuinely like them, but the truth is that a lot of them just dont care and treat them as if they were strangers.

It all boils down to Takopi being retarded and killing himself for being retarded, but somehow this is good enough to fix everything.

Seems like a clearly rushed manga but back then people said the amount of chapters was planned from the start, so it might just be an author who can't write.

I can tell you but it'd be another spoiler
First chapter is "to you in 2016", but then we get "to you in 2022", aka Takopi originally landed when they were high school age and only met Marina first. Cue montage of Takopi hanging with Marina while she gets abused by her broken mom, Marina and Azuma meet again for the first time since elementary and she gets him to go out with her. Apparently things will go okay, even the mom gets more chill after hearing that, but then Shizuka transfers in and Azuma dumps Marina for Shizuka for the same reasons he liked Shizuka during elementary i.e. Shizuka looks like his mom.

So Marina gets depressed, the mom gets super angry and tries to hit her, Marina kills the mom in self-defense and tells Takopi to do something. Takopi decides the right course of action is to travel back in time and kill Shizuka, so he goes back to his planet to use the time-travelling clock, his mom gets angry at him etc etc and he gets sent back to 2016 but without any of his memories, the only thing he knows is he is now banned from going back to the planet. That's when chapter 1 happens.

Mind you, all of this happens within the span of 1 chapter, some of these events are like 1 page long, it's all incredibly rushed and when current Takopi gets his memories back, nothing comes out of it. Only that he wants to "make evryone happy", it's really undercooked

Idon't think a 9-year-old kid should really atone for her sins. Kids are kids, you can't expect them to understand what is right or wrong easily, her mother manipulated her into believing Shizuka and her mother stole her father's affection and destroyed her family. In her eyes she was doing everything she could to save her family. In the end she understood that it was wrong and that Shizuka was just another victim, and that's okay.
In a manga where everyone is abused and turned into an abuser because of their parents, Takopi remained pure and innocent till the very end, dying for what he believed was right and never letting himself succumb to the cycle of hatred

It's really not a happy ending at all though. Nothing really gets resolved in Shizuka, Marina and Azuma's families. The point of the story is that they are all victims of their family situations in their own ways, and they all end up abused and twisted. In the final chapter Shizuka snaps and asks Takopi what she should have done when everything went to shit in her life, and all he could do is to hug Shizuka. That probably explains at least part of why you feel like the resolution lacks weight, it's because there really isn't a resolution. All these poor kids can do is cope with their fucked up reality. All he can do is help the three kids with little nods.

He tells Azuma to fight with his brother like he asks Takopi to do, which makes him get closer with his peers, and when both Marina and Azuma see the doodle of Takopi they remember him somewhere deep down and bond over it together without really knowing why. When Takopi monologues in the end after having sacrificed himself to activate the time camera once final time, he once again begs for forgiveness for not being able to fix their broken families, but remarks that at least they are not alone in their suffering anymore, that the most important gadget of them all was talking. And so Shizuka and Marina talk.

Even the lack of Marina's atonement is something that is a little questionable to focus on, seeing as what Shizuka was up to when searching for her dog. It's a story that is very focused on the human condition. How the abused become abusers, and how like you said, (bad) things just happen sometimes. And how sometimes there is no happy ending, but at least there could be some small consolation for those who live difficult lives.

It's a happy ending in the sense that the characters are in a good place, or heading to a good place, at the end. The resolution exists in their minds and interrelationships. I just think it's weak and unearned.

Them bonding over repressed memories of the magical alien is also bullshit to me. It skips the human moment of connection by tying it up with magic that wouldn't possibly exist. Nothing in the world could cause that sequence of events outside of the manga's magical deus ex machina, so instead of a proper reconciliation we get the author forcing the characters into the situation he wants.

The reason I ask for atonement is precisely because at the end of the story "everything will be okay" and they're now besties. I forget, did we even get a sorry from her? I mean it wasn't just some random teasing, she was actively trying to make her kill herself. The resolution is completely rushed and meaningless.

I think it's on theme. Takopi swore the bring a smile to Shizuka's face, and promised to somehow save Marina. All he could do in the end was make them talk a little. Perhaps it's weak and unearned to you, but to me it's tragic and bittersweet how little Takopi's ultimate sacrifice amounted to, how little he could do to help these kids despite having all manner of gadgets and a heart of gold. The only small happiness left is that at least the children aren't alone anymore. That's kind of the culmination of the themes in this story I think.

It's a little bit rushed maybe, and Takopi's ability to fix the camera by sacrificing himself is a deus ex machina kind of element. But none of that diminished my enjoyment of the story honestly. I was fully invested through the two or three hours that I took to read this story in one go and I honestly think it's a masterpiece. Maybe you would have enjoyed an ending where Takopi just becomes an alien therapist for the three kids, but I think this kind of ending was poetic in its bittersweetness, even though it loses a few points in believability. The core message of the story really is that some problems are unfixable, and at times you can only talk about your issues.

That's not an issue to me. People bond over things that are seemingly "deus ex" all the time. like a group of people experience bad event (think sinking cruise ship or something) and bond after making it out / as the only survivors / whatever. This line of thought is equivalent to "if that thing never happened, those people would have never bonded!" well, yeah, but the thing did happen.
I could understand writing it off if it was something like mind control magic to make them get along, or magic aphrodisiac to start a relationship when they otherwise would have never had the sex, but an event that happened and then a normal relationship starting due to "wow, that was crazy" is extremely natural.
