If 90 percent of Netflix watchers are watching dubbed that means more people are watching subbed anime than ever before by a wide margin. Of course. For those saying anime wasn't niche in the 2000s. That basically destroys their argument. Be real. What percent of Americans were watching anime via fansubs in say 2006? Probably less than 1 percent. The reality is watching anime with subs is still very niche.

The entire thing is just gaslighting and a sad attempt to push a narrative. Netflix wasn't referring to people that watched half of their anime library, but people that watched an episode of demon slayer because their friend told them it is super cool. You will never turn these people into "anime watchers" and pretending like they are relevant to any anime discussion is fucking hilarious.

I don't get how /a/ is still so elitist about dubbed even in 2025.

In my country (Brazil) the dubs are better than the original for 99% of people. They localize the jokes and references, and they also reframe the dialogue to be less of that awkward Japanese formality. The quality of western dubs is also quickly overtaking eastern ones. And finally, being able to fully focus on the animation as opposed to having to read the subs brings a lot of comfort, no matter how quickly you can read it. So the final product is way more palatable for the western casual audience.

Now don't get me wrong: as hobbyists that appreciate Japanese culture I understand that most people here prefer to watch the original audio. But it's not reasonable to expect normalfags to do the same. This is like looking at fish in an aquarium and saying "wow what a bunch of retards why don't they just get out and start walking like humans", it's unrealistic and they are doing what is better for themselves.

Sample of Brazilian dub that imo beats the original: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kys9jSLx4Q

I shit you not most dubbed watchers are just downright dumb. It takes them significant brainpower to read subtitles at playback speed, and most of the time they're stimulating themselves with 3 different screens and tasks at the same time so they're only understanding half of whats happening in the anime. Every time I talk to them about this, it's usually just "oh I don't wanna read" or "oh I listen to it in the background while I browse Instagram".

Don't take them seriously.

How are any of these objections stupid?

I watched subbed for 90% of my life so I clearly have the capacity for it. But nowadays I prefer dubbed, it's just a different experience. Watching dubbed makes me feel like a kid watching the morning cartoons, which is probably what the Japanese feel when they watch their own anime. It's not meant to always be a pseudo cultural experience, in the end it's just cartoons aimed either at children or at young adults.

1. Eng dub voice actors are absolutely horrendous. It's not like actual native English cartoons at all, where the voice acting is fun and childish, but not downright cringe-inducing and directed/recorded by retards like with dubbed Japanese content. Listen to the voice acting in, say, Pixar movies for example and compare it to your average anime dub. There's no comparison.
2. Multi-tasking recreational content consumption fries your brain, I don't think I really need to explain why having anime, tiktok, youtube and subway surfers on at the same time is terrible for you.
3. Subs retain more of the original intent/meaning. If you know some Japanese yourself then even moreso by hearing the original lines yourself.

By the way I feel the same way for ESLs who watch English content in their own local dubs, btw. Original language is always better.

>Multi-tasking recreational content consumption fries your brain
What does that have to do with the subject? You made up a strawman where everyone that watches dubbed also multitasks tiktok+youtube+anime. This is obviously unfounded projection. Some people multitask and watch dubbed, some people multitask and watch subbed, some people don't multitask and watch dubbed, some people don't multitask and watch subbed.

>Subs retain more of the original intent/meaning
Correct but again, at some point you need to question if going through autistic lengths to preserve the "original intent" is an accurate anime watching experience. I bet you also look for the most accurate sub, and you look for the video with the best quality, and so on.

Which is cool from a hobbyist perspective. But do you think the average Japanese person is sweating over these technical details when they watch anime on their TV?

If you want originality, remember that the original intent of most anime is to be watched casually as a morning cartoon. The normalfags that just watch random garbage dubbed are having an experience closer to the Japanese than you are curating every technical aspect of the media.

>I bet you also look for the most accurate sub, and you look for the video with the best quality, and so on.
Who's making strawmen now?
>But do you think the average Japanese person is sweating over these technical details when they watch anime on their TV?
No...because the average Japanese person speaks Japanese.

So far you seem to be proving my claim of "dub watchers are dumb".

You didn't answer my main point which is the fact that casually watching anime dubbed because you find it fun is closer to the original Japanese experience than autistically turning it into a hobby and curating every technical aspect of it.

It's not about speaking Japanese. It's about the investment in the activity and what you get out of it. Again, these are cartoons for children. You're supposed to be able to pick one up casually, watch it dubbed and have fun doing it. That's what the Japanese do.

Are you aware that Japanese otaku exist, newfaggot? Caring about encode quality and bitrate isn't just a western weeb thing. You continue to self-report more with every reply.
>Again, these are cartoons for children
Shounenshitter spotted. I really needn't say more, but I'm feeling generous.
>You're supposed to be able to pick one up casually, watch it dubbed and have fun doing it.
You're not SUPPOSED to do anything. Everyone can enjoy anime how they want - all I did was point out some notable differences in intelligence and literacy that I typically observe in dub watchers.

Yes and they are the minority. This is my entire point. Casually watching anime is the intended experience that 90% of the Japanese have.

It is retarded to be a hobbyist about children's cartoon and then belittle the children that watch the cartoon casually. You're like a neckbeard brony being mad that little girls are not watching MLP correctly.

Like, sure, go and have fun watching it subbed. But you sound ridiculous when you mock normalfags for watching it casually. They are doing what the medium was meant to do.

I already addressed this - learn to read. If you only watch shounenshit made for babbies, that's a (You) problem. No need to project it onto the entire medium and other people.

I never said it was "not okay" to watch anything dubbed. People can watch dubs all they want, just like how people can also eat fast food or stick things up their ass all they want. I may think certain things upon learning they're engaged in such activities, but it's not like I'm out to police them on how they choose to spend their free time. I already said this, reread the third point here: >>280495306

Nope lol, not semantics. Just simple basic logic. If you genuinely don't understand the difference between laughing at someone for doing something stupid (such as a homeless man sniffing his own farts) and saying something is *not okay* to do (such as a homeless man beating the shit out of an innocent child), then you are even stupider than I thought.

Might be fine for Brazil. All I know is English dubs are shit. All the voice actors sound like they're embarrassed to be voice acting for an anime character. They almost never put real emotion into it. I've noticed in recent years that non-English dubs tend to be better.
