Allen aced the written exam for his Royal Sorcerer application, and he would've aced the practical exam as well. Except there was a problem, though none of which is Allen's fault.
Allen is human, but he was adopted (found abandoned in some ruins) as a baby by a Beastfolk couple of the Wolf Clan. Because of this, Allen identifies himself as Allen of the Wolf Clan. This is also how Caren of the Wolf Clan is his non-blood related sister, but this sort of thing doesn't matter among the Beastfolk as they value ties between Beastfolk more than anything, to the point where swearing an oath 'as of the (animal) Clan' is the highest level of making an oath. Familial bonds trump everything in Beastfolk culture.
There is a prevailing thought amongst some of the kingdom's nobility that Beastfolk are not to be treated as equals to humans. As Allen identifies himself as being of the Wolf Clan, he is regarded by those nobles as a lowly Beastfolk.
This becomes a major problem as in his Royal Sorcerer practical exam, Prince Gerard who is part of the nobles who look down on Beastfolk, was his opponent and ordered him to beg before him like one and also insulted his Beastfolk parents.
Allen did not take that kindly and proceeded to beat the crap out of Prince Gerard and walk out. As the examiner of the exam also looked down on beastfolk, the examiner chose to fail Allen on this exam.
Thus Allen failed his Royal Sorcerer exam, and the story starts with him letting the Professor of the Royal University know.
